Snow

The snow was coming down faster than they could shovel. Coop looked over at Ashlee feverishly trying to clear the walk, her cheeks bright red from the cold and frustration clearly evident on her face. He smiled. She was so darn adorable.

He stabbed the shovel he was holding into a snow bank and picked up a handful of the icy flakes packing them between his hands. He playfully lobbed the mound and it landed on the back of her head, partially sliding down her neck and inside of her coat. She yelped and jump up and down trying to get the cold slush away from her warm skin. She looked at him with an aggravated smile, “I suppose you think that was funny?”

He grinned at her, hands on his hips “Yeah, actually I think that was incredibly funny”.

She nodded at him with a devilish smile and then bent down and picked up a handful of the cold fluff and charged at him, knocking him backwards into a pile of snow while pushing the icy snow under his shirt bottom and all over his toned stomach. He yelled “Ashlee THAT is cold!”.

She laughed and said “No, THAT is funny”. He bent over and kissed her deeply.

As he pulled back for air, she frowned slightly at him and slugged him in the arm. “Ouch”, “What was that for?”

“I’m all wet now”.

He jumped up and pulled her to her feet as a big grin spread across his face. “Exactly the plan Miss Wolfe”. “Let’s get you out of those clothes”. “Now”.

She grinned at him as they sprinted to the building.

Angel

He turned over and looked at the beauty lying next to him. He ran the back of his fingers across the satiny soft skin of her cheek and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. He loved just watching her sleep. The crystal eyes with flecks of gold now hidden by heavy lids, were the most perfect shade of blue. She was truly a gift from heaven. He placed his hand lightly upon her back and closed his eyes. He relished the pulsation of her beating heart. She was a real live breathing angel. His angel. Ashlee’s angel. Their new baby daughter.

Soldier

Ashlee was sitting in a small diner on the outskirts of Springfield on Christmas Eve. She had just ordered a cup of coffee, when a returning serviceman carrying a duffle bag on his shoulder sat down beside her.

He asked the waitress for a cup of black coffee and then turned towards Ashlee and said “Merry Christmas.”

“Merry Christmas, heading home?”

He smiled “Yes I’m going home for the holidays, what about you, what’s your story?”

She looked at him questioningly “What do you mean?”

“Well, a beautiful girl like you sitting in a diner all alone on Christmas Eve?” “There must be an interesting story behind that.”

Ashlee sighed “Just feeling a little sorry for myself I guess.”

He nodded. “I have plenty of time, if you want to talk.” Ashlee didn’t know why, but she trusted the stranger right away and started to explain how it had taken her six months to realize she had thrown away the best thing in her life.

He took a sip of his coffee and sighed, “Walking away from the best thing in your life?” “Now that’s something I know a little bit about.” He glanced at her intent eyes and continued, “I left my love to go fight the war.” “She tried to stop me, but I couldn’t be persuaded: I wanted to follow in my father’s footsteps and be a hero.”

“What happened?” Ashlee asked.

He ran his hand through his short hair in much the same manner as Coop. She felt drawn to this stranger, but couldn’t explain why. “I left, and she thought that meant I didn’t love her as much as I loved the military.” “By the time I realized all I really wanted was her, fate intervened and it was too late.”

Ashlee placed her hand on his arm, “I’m so sorry.”

He took another gulp of his hot beverage and nodded towards her “It’s not too late for you though.” “It’s Christmas, the season for miracles.” “Why are you sitting here with me, when you want to be with him?” Ashlee shrugged her shoulders not really knowing the answer to that question. “Go on Ashlee, make your dreams come true.”

She stammered “How did you know my name?”

He grinned at her and replied “Like I said, it’s the season for miracles.”

She nodded “Yes it is.” “Thank you so much for the talk.”

“Your welcome”.

As Ashlee pulled on her coat, the stranger got up and walked out of the diner yelling “Merry Christmas.” She waived to him, paid her check and then turned and walked out into the snowy night. She watched the soldier cross the street and then simply vanish into thin air.

Smiling in awe at what had just happened, she looked heavenward and whispered “Thank You”. Pulling her coat tighter she hurried on to her car. Christmas was waiting for her.

Fruitcake

Ashlee had been so proud of the cake she made Coop for his Christmas birthday. It looked just like a cake from a magazine. That was 2 hours ago. Now Coop sat on the floor in the bathroom emptying his stomach of its contents. She bent over and patted his face with a cold cloth. “I guess I let the fruitcake ferment too long?”

He looked up at her with a forlorn look on his face “You think?” and turned back towards the toilet.

She said “I’m so sorry baby, I wish there was something I could do.”

As he sat back and leaned his head against the wall, he jokingly commented, “You could learn to read, maybe”.

She looked at him questioningly and asked “What?”

He grinned at her “The list Ashlee….it said Fudgecake not Fruitcake.

“Oh no” she murmured … “But you still love me right?” He nodded and leaned over to kiss her. Shaking her head no, she quickly put her hand up to his mouth “That’s okay, honey…. I believe you.”

Ornament

It was Christmas Eve and Coop and Ashlee had just returned home from an afternoon and evening with the Coopers. Coop settled into his favorite recliner as Ashlee wandered over to the tree and pulled out a small gift. She walked over to Coop kissing him lightly and said “Merry Christmas”.

He accepted the package and asked “You want me to open this now?”

“Yeah, it’s really important this one gets opened tonight”, she replied. He sit up in his chair and started to unwrap the present. Inside was an aged cardboard box. On the top of the box was an old photo.

He picked it up and smiled “Hey, this was in my dad’s photo album.”

“Yeah, I kind of borrowed it”. The picture was of Coop’s mother, Jenna, holding a baby Coop in her arms, a radiant smile on her face. She was hanging an ornament on a Christmas tree. The back of the photo simply said Henry’s First Ornament.

“Go ahead, open the box Coop”.

He carefully lifted the lid and pushed back the yellowed tissue paper. He gasped as he pulled out the ornament in the photo. In his hand lay a beautiful crystal angel hanging from a braided gold cord.

“I’ve never actually seen this ornament, how did you find this?”

Ashlee walked over to him and confessed, “A little help from Buzz”.

She grabbed his hand and pulled him to his feet. Together they walked over to their Christmas tree. Ashlee held up the photo “Here, your mom is hanging the angel for you, now it’s your turn to hang it for her”. Coop looked at her with misty eyes and nodded. He reached over and hung the ornament on the tree.

He kissed his finger and lightly placed it on the angel saying Merry Christmas Mom”. Then he turned and took Ashlee in his arms “and Merry Christmas to my real angel too”, and he kissed her deeply.

It was the most perfect gift ever.

Hope

Christmas, the season of perpetual hope. It sounded good when he heard that in a movie. It sounded good now. It just wasn’t something he could envision in his own life. Not now. Not since….well not since Ashlee. To this day he still couldn’t figure out why he just stood there in his room and watched her walk out. Why didn’t he run after her? Why didn’t he beg her to stay? He foolishly had spent the last few months reliving that moment over and over and still didn’t know why he froze to that spot and didn’t move, didn’t say a word. The best part of him, the real part of him walked out the door and he had just stood there. At that moment he decided he wasn’t going to just stand there anymore. He grabbed his coat and keys and headed for the door of Company.

Just as he opened the door to go out, Ashlee walked in. She said “Hi Coop”.

Being caught off guard, he muttered “Um, Hi Ash”.

“She looked at him questioningly “Are you leaving?”

“Uh Yeah, I mean No”.

She grinned and asked “Well which is it”?

“That’s just it Ashlee, without you, I don’t know whether I’m coming or going”.

She gave him a hopeful look “Well maybe we could figure that out together, Coop Cooper.” A huge smile spread across his face as he nodded. The hope that had eluded him for months came flooding back into his heart. He reached down, took her hand in his and led her over to “their” booth.

“Buzz burger & fries”? asked Ashlee.

He smiled “Yeah, that’d be a great start”.
