Nottingham to Cromford by bike (and back again)

So decided to try and push the ride a little bit this week. Though I’d try north of the city for a change and head for the Peak District, or at least the edge of it.

Hmm you're much younger aren't you.
I did 21 miles of relatively flat terrain yesterday after a break since 21/11 and that was enough for me.
Queried the riding experience of someone who asked what bike was best for the Wrynose pass as they had applied to do the lakeland challenge. No idea about bikes and doing one of the steepest ascents in England :O

Lakeland Challenge? You mean the Fred Whitton? In that case they should be more worried about hardknott, that's the biggy on that one. And the 112 miles total distance isn't something to forget either. They really want a road orientated bike; lightweight, skinnyish tyres (25/28), but with low mountain bike gearing (ie; triple chainset with 24x32 low). Probably avoid a full on tourer (bombproof but weighty), but something advertised as 'fast tourer' or 'audax' would probably fit the bill, and be comfier than a full on racer. And they need to try lots, as fit is very important when you're sat on one for more that an hour.

Other than that, lots of miles on the bike before hand. Some really good cycling shorts. And probably a pot of Sudocrem as well....

This is pretty much starting back from about 18 years ago before I moved to nottingham, with a year about 14 when I had a mountain bike before it got pinched.

I'll leave it to the more experienced riders on that forum to advise though none of them queried the persons prior experience and waded in with opinions on bikes that didn't take into account the 1 in 3 hill.
Hmm see http://www.spoonchallenges.com/rte.asp?id=15 It seems to be row Windemere, cycle up Wrynose and climb Scafell Pike though at 26 miles the cycling would seem to be from Ambleside to Wasdale head which takes in HardKnott which is just as steep with bonus bends :D
