Out of Time

I don't know if anyone knows (or cares), but my favorite band is R.E.M. They recently announced that they were breaking up/dis-banding. There was no drama or falling out, they're just done.

I fell in love with R.E.M. in 7th grade. I think I might have first discovered them through watching Beverly Hills 90210. 90210 actually played cool/alternative ( Read more... )

I was not a 90210 fan (sorry!) and was pissed that they used "Losing my Religion" as a soundtrack to the defloration of Brenda. Much complaining among my indie music friends that REM had sold out. (I expect Michael Stipe was very amused by it all.)

Out of Time is wonderful. "Near Wild Heaven" is such a subversive song - romantic music, with a sting in the lyrics.

I can imagine them reuniting in the next five years. The have such a great catalogue...

If you want to get technical, Brenda didn't lose her virginity to "Losing My Religion." That's the song that was playing in Dylan's car when she broke up with him (the 1st time) after her pregnancy scare. ;-)

I can understand that people thought R.E.M. sold out, but if not for 90210, little Brianne would never have discovered and fallen in love with R.E.M.!

When I was in college, R.E.M. performed on an episode of Party of Five. My best friend thought THAT was a total sell-out.

True! For my peer group (ie older than you) it just wasn't cool to watch 90210 - fine to watch Melrose Place ironically but not a high school show. No actual reflection on the show itself!

And REM also licensed their songs for a Corey Haim/Corey Feldman movie so they would have been thoroughly pleased to be on 90210!

Which Corey Haim/Feldman movie had R.E.M.?

I can't believe I didn't think of the Smallville episode, Slumber, that had an R.E.M. soundtrack!
