Taken from speaking with no less than 3 friends I have within the furry community who have the same issues and developed it later in life as well. It depends on how severe your case is. The insulin shot thing, in addition to the checking blood sugars no matter where you go, is and will always be a pain in the behind, but the general wisdom always seems to be get yourself on a very regular schedule, and keep track of times that you eat and try to stick to those times within a small margin of error, and that all helps to put things in place so it at least defers from constant need to do blood sugar checks every-hour-on-the-hour.
As for could you have done anything better earlier with diet or food or whatever to help prevent? Our family genes as far as I know didn't indicate any history with adult diabetes. Still sorry it had to strike, and you can't second guess on the why's... just do what you're doing... take it face on and get informed and have control over it.

And, as far as the family goes, it's all over my mom's side, and my Dad had diabetes... I didn't even know that until he was gone. I always wonder how much of the family even knew he had cancer. I think a lot of the Voegtlins are quiet about their illnesses.
