Which phone should I get?

I have time, still nursing along my beaten and broken phone, but it's on my mind. Do I replace it now, before the work season starts? Do I wait? It seems like the sensible thing to do but not if I really don't want to carry both a phone and an iPod. How important is good GPS? I really only use it on vacations. Apparently, my phone saw me writing

Brett's a big fan of his google G1 phone, which as far as i know, has basically the same apps as the iphone, but are all free.

and a flip out keyboard which i like, and the music player is itunes free - also a definite improvement.
