Hmm. Cecilia only has 3 big, really healthy-looking leaves, along with several small ones and some that are browning at the ends. Do I just take scissors to the bad ones?
She seems to like as much light as I can possibly give her. (Well, short of the time I left her outside when we were moving into Paradise). She started doing better this summer when I moved her to a room where I could keep the blinds open all day. Winter is hard on her.
I did buy the hippie organic potting soil--that could be why it recommended talking. I forget--did you ever read A Wind in the Door by Madeleine L'Engle? There's a long discussion in that book about talking to plants and playing music for them. (I'm 90% sure it's that one but it's possible I'm thinking of A Swiftly Tilting Planet instead.)
Is there daily tending I should be doing beyond checking to see if she needs water?
I would say bigger pot, otherwise why are you taking her out at all? (I only report when things are root-bound and I'm a pretty geenish thumb person).
I would just fertilize her, figure out how much sun she needs and take advantage of the spring sun. I also agree with the cutting off of the dead or yellow leaves- green ones that are brown on the edges are okay as long as the rest is in good shape. Then after you've done that for a while, figure out if she still seems like she needs a new pot.
That's kind of what I've been doing since this summer (except for actively cutting out the old leaves, because I'm nervous about taking scissors to her). But she's been in the same soil for years, and this is really gross, but I just noticed recently that it looks sort of moldy around the edges. I don't know why, because I haven't been watering *that* much, but I just feel like a new pot of fresh soil is called for.

How do you know when a plant is root-bound?

I'm starting to think I should buy a larger pot too, before I try this, just in case.
