coloring tutorial #2

May 10, 2011 03:00

Made for crucified for icon_talk's Ask The Maker meme.

It's fairly simple, won't go too much into details because I'm lazy. Won't give away PSD's, because again - this is really simple.

I'm using photoshop cs3 - includes selective coloring.
original // remake

->

1. I tried to crop it as close as I could to the original - it's not exact but it's pretty close. Didn't sharpen it since the image is fairly clear, but if you're used to preparing your base, you can go right ahead.

2.Duplicate your base and set it to screen @ 25%.

(After going through the tutorial, I realized the icon looks closer to the original without this step. But I decided I liked this result better - so if you want the original result, just skip this step.)

3. Create a new color layer and fill it with #ffe074, then set it to color burn @ 42%. This sets the tone of the coloring.

4. Add this texture (
) made by me and set it to soft light @ 100%.

5.Now for some selective coloring!
reds: -73, -12, -9, +21
yellows: -4, -7, -8, -20
whites: -11, -9, +6, -30
neutrals: -20, -9, -6, +7
This really makes the red "pop".

6. Last step; another selective coloring layer!
reds: -16, 0, -7, +9

And that's it. I actually like this result better than the original. Any questions, problems, ext. Just comment and I'll try to help you as much as I can. Hope this has been helpful.
