The Starfish Story

Original Story by: Loren Eisley

One day a man was walking along the beach when he noticed a boy picking something up and gently throwing it into the ocean.

Approaching the boy, he asked, “What are you doing?” The youth replied, “Throwing starfish back into the ocean. The surf is up and the tide is going out.  If I don’t throw them ( Read more... )

I think I had heard it when I was a kid, but never thought of it once I grew up. It really is relevant to everyone. I love it ^^

I really love this story. I know I've heard this before, but forgot all about it. It's a good story and this is something that I've been having to deal with recently, too. I'm studying for a career in mental health and friends and family are telling me "you're so smart, you should go for something that pays better and not settle for something that won't be worth it." >.> I'm not settling; if I make a difference in one life, that's all that matters!

Ah, sorry for dropping my drama on you, but thank you for sharing! I needed help remembering that I'm on the right path. :)

ah! so sorry I just realised I never responded to this.
Don't apologise!! and I'm glad that I posted this at a time that you can appreciate being reminded of it. It's a tough path you are chosing, and you have to be strong, but if it's what you want to do and is how you want to make a difference then work hard for it ne?
Im actually a qualified occupational therapist and work in drug and alcohol counselling at the moment. And as much as a lot of my clients will not engage or will relapse or will never change, the ocassional success story is the reason I love the job. When you have worked hard with a client for a couple of months and they have really made a change for the better with their life. Being able to say that you helped is a wonderful feeling, especially when they thank you personally. It doesn't happen often, but it makes the whole thing worth it. I was reminded of this story too, I hadnt thought of it since being a kid, but it really holds true, especially in the field im in at the moment.

^^ fight-o!!

No worries. That's awesome that you work in drug and alcohol counseling. I'm sure it's quite stressful and frustrating at times, but those success stories really are great aren't they?

I had also thought about being an Occupational Therapist. Did a lot of research though and found out that wasn't for me. Lol. I'm a bit of a germ-a-phobe and there's a lot of icky things you have to help them learn how to do. Sounds mean of me since they really deserve the help, but I'm sure there is someone else out there that could do a better job at that than me. Lol.

I haven't figured out the exact way I want to help people with mental issues, but I will and I will work my behind off to get a job doing it.

Anyway... *fighting to be the little boy* :)

It doesn't matter if it's late, all that matters is that you felt the desire to say it ^^
Thank you ^^
