I've been thinking about a new PC again. Mine is currently coming on its 3rd year with only minor tweeks (I doubled the ram to 1 gig about a year back). As a geek I am always craving new toys and top of the line specs but I find myself thinking ..... do I need it? what do I use my computer for? now-a-days mostly webcomics, downloaded scans, music, ( Read more... )

If the cheaper laptops had decent sized screens I'd think of getting one of those, but it seem if you wanna spend less then 2000$ you get 13 inches or less.

Yup, the #1 thing you pay for on Apple laptops is screen size. On the other hand, if you get one of the Macbook Pros, you can use them for a schweet el cheap-o dual monitor setup when you're at your desk.

I was in the same boat as you pretty much, I was looking at those shiny new Core 2 Duo processors and going "me want! me want! but current boxes still doing me fine, narg." Then, because I was suddenly able to acquire a 6300 C2D on the cheap ($150 while they go for ~$250 at retail) and I found a motherboard for it that'd let me just carry over my old DDR1, AGP, and ATA100/133 hardware while opening up the option to upgrade to DDR2, PCI-E, and SATA incrementally down the line, it just made sense.

Now that I've enjoyed dual-core action for half a year, there's no way I'm ever going back on my main box. It just rocks! Now mind you I'm often running some fairly intensive stuff (I'll quite often have 2 iterations of Quenc running simultaneously, or be encoding with SMP-enabled versions of either x264 or Xvid) so where on my old AMD 2500+ box I was happy with the performance I'm actually itching for more (mostly because the poor overclocking potential of my otherwise fine mobo is holding me back, I can only get my 6300 up to 2.1 ghz from ~ ( ... )

Well thats the thing, once I do step up I can never go back but for now I just don't have any good reasons to step up other then geek cred.
