The next chapter of your life starts....NOW!!!!

I received a phone call today from the woman who owns the sober living house I’ve been co-managing for six months. Well, she doesn’t own the house, she just leases it. And she’s decided to give up that lease because she’s sick of the whole thing. So, seven other women and I need to vacate the premises in one week ( Read more... )

I'm pretty sure that's not legal to only give you a week's notice. It's definitely not legal under standard tenant agreements and I can't imagine it would be any different for a sober house. 30 days notice is generally the minimum. They have to give cause and depending on what the cause is, you sometimes get longer. That woman is highly unethical.

I don't know if you want to put your energy towards it, but you could probably fight to get yourself some more time. One of these places might be able to help you: http://www.fairhousingmarin.com/what_is_fair_housing/resources.htm

You could also try Marin Housing Authority to see if they can help place you or any of the other women in another house. http://www.marinhousing.org/

I'm really sorry to hear this is happening.

I really appreciate it. The slumlord I mean landlord is for sure counting on everyone leaving quietly. But it is true that people have contigency plans. No one will be living under a bridge unless they choose to. So, it sucks and it's questionable, but everyone's more or less resigned.

Oh, that sucks. Just hardcore sucks. What she's doing must be illegal and is definitely unethical/immoral. I hope there's a recourse to get you and the other women more time to adjust and find other options.

Apparently I was to only one who felt outrage or real fear. As the house manager, I was literally the last person to know. Everyone else had already moved past the upset phase when my lips were still trembling.

i've heard that refusing to vacate can buy you a lot more time. it's hard to get someone out who's already in there. there's a long legal process.

if you aren't interested in getting in a legal fight, maybe craigslist for some short-notice options?

i'm really sorry you're having to deal with this. yeesh. it sounds awful.

Thank you. It looks like my 'stable nature' is finally paying off and I might get to stay.

I'm just doing some catching up on the flist, and am glad things are looking much better for you than when you posted this.

BUt really, man. A week? Because she's sick of dealing with it? That's some fucked up shit. Never mind legalities and whatnot...That's just plain old bad karma.

She is a slippery one, for sure. It's all totally justified and copacetic in her mind, no doubt. I don't have the heart or stomach to ask her for her real reasoning. Frankly I think she got off on seeing me squirm at the news, because I'm usually so rational and good natured in a crisis.
