The lady I went to take care of today keeps insisting that it's time for her to pack up and head home before her mother finds out she's snuck out of the house again. This woman is in her mid 90s and has Alzheimers. Suffice to say, her mother has been gone for a long time ( Read more... )

sad but beautiful description.

you should more of these. (if you can take it mentally, that is).

i volunteer with dementia patients sometimes.

i'm always stunned by the questions they ask.

"what are we doing?"

"playing bingo."

"why?"

"because it's fun."

"why is it fun?"

"because it's a game."

"what's a game?"

and so on.

it's like deconstructing life and seeing it in new ways you always took for granted.

I always feel a little loopy toward the end of my shift because everything is sort of an abstraction with her. No wonder her sons are practically vaulting into their cars by the time I get to their house. It's exhausting, but I'm really grateful for it for the deconstruction of everyday life, like you said.
