Below is a decent sized rant, or story perhaps. You're welcome to read or not as you so choose (obviously). Things that I wanted to mention outside of that cut, though ( Read more... )

I was actually thinking about applying into the JET program too, but I still need to do more research on it. I reallyREALLY wanna go to Japan, even if it's not for very long.

I kinda get what you're saying about the whole Koreatown story, though. I guess from the other side of the spectrum. I'm Asian, and I guess when I'm in an Asian store, I guess I expect there to only be Asians?... Personally, though, it doesn't bother me since it's a free country, and hey, I can go into any store I want to also, so it's only fair. Some people are just kinda surprised, I guess, when they see non-Asians in an Asian grocery mart or something.

I can also understand what you mean about going to Japan, but I'm sure you won't be the only non-Asian person there. XD I guess it will take some time getting used to, but I have a couple Caucasian friends who have spent time there and they said it was wonderful, so! The experience should be worth it. :3

Yeah, I don't blame people for giving me funny looks or anything - I probably would have too in their position. It's not the kind of place that is really meant to attract anyone else (even less so than Asian groceries since people seem to be getting into random foods). It just had a Korean cd store and I reeaaaaally wanted some cds (TVXQ, Se7en, Koyote). ^_^ More than anything I think I'm a little surprised that it hadn't happened before, given all the random places I go. It was just surprising to me since I tend not to pay attention to ethnicities or whether I'm the only Caucasian or the only girl (which happens the most). I know I might stand out, but I sort of forget that I really do at times ( ... )

I hate to say it, but koreans can be very...yeah. Especially native koreans-- they'll be the first ones to admit it (a taxi driver mentioned this to me while i was there). So don't take it to heart, and def. don't let it discourage you from going to Japan! I'm sure that you'd have a fantastic time.

I hadn't really heard that before. I guess I've just started paying any attention to Korean music or culture, though. I'll definitely still try to get to Japan. It just reminded me of the realities - like that I'm at least half a foot taller than large portions of the population. I'm taller than most "tall" Japanese men. =) And the not-reading-the-language thing. And basically how I'm really not likely to ever blend in there. ^_^
