when in rome...

europe is not what i expected it to be. venice is wayyy overrated, and rome just looks like a third-world country. dirty, messy and crooked. and of course, i've had the customary almost-knocked-down-by-a-motorbike at a pedestrian crossing today. the rider apologised but i think i just stared at him ape-shocked. no, i don't know what ape-shocked is ( Read more... )

Yeah Europe is not clean for sure. My image growing up was that it was very clean compared to Asia, Africa and Latin America, and certainly Norway is much cleaner than most major cities anywhere (though probably not Singapore and definitely not Japan) I am always so put off by how dirty Europe is when I travel. Maybe it's a relative to expectations thing. Although I did find Geneva to be really clean, did you go there? And yes I am really fixated on cleanliness it started in London when I blew dirt out my nose every day.

I am thoroughly enjoying your renaissance of updates these days. I think your cerebral "style" (can I use such a word here?) is jiving extremely well with what I like to read coupled with your great ability to dislike things without being a jerk about it, unlike me. Anyway, I hope the rest of your trip turns out good.

haha i remember that snot-related anecdote! i've been to london about 6 years ago and it didn't seem all that bad. perhaps it was because i went in winter? nope i didn't go to geneva; just to zurich and luzern in switzerland. very biased aforementioned family told me luzern was the most beautiful city in der Schweiz haha ( ... )

florence is fantastic! it's what italy in my head was like, haha. hmm, i don't know how europe is 'organic' compared to asian cities? it really depends on what you're looking for while travelling i guess. what i liked about hong kong, for example, was the atmosphere, the hustle & bustle, the fact that it still has tradition infused with modernity. consumerism is everywhere - huge billboards all over the place here too, with great shopping districts in cities like milan, paris, london etc. i shall refrain from commenting on paris before i get there ( ... )
