It's a boy!

We adopted Jake today (aka - Keither, Licorice, Liquor, and Big Black). He's about a year old and looks a bit like an underfed lab. I don't know what his exact mix is. He's tall, lanky, and black.

You found a new puppy! Very cool! Ask your vet about his hips/legs. I've seen male dogs who don't lift their leg, but I'd check anyways because I haven't seen very many of them and at least two of those did have something wrong. Also, don't feel bad about not taking the other dog. If your rescue's experience is anything like ours, they're probably grateful you even called instead of just never showing up.
