Well, technically ulcerative colitis is a gastrointestinal, chronic disease, so it never actually "goes away". But I've been in remission for over five years now, and in many cases it vanishes for good while in others it can resurface sporadically with decades of remission in between. I think ulcerative illnesses in general are treated similarly, though; you're never actually cured, and you have to watch it (ie., certain foods, smoking, drinking, even stress, etc.). Then again, I don't really know what you have. For a while I had the exact kind of pain.
I just realized I didn't really answer your question. When I first got it, I was misdiagnosed several times, and it got to the point where I was so sick I had to take a form of a steroid. That shit was magical, I got better really fast. It was never that bad again. These days, I take a much milder substance as a safeguard against future episodes, but there are no guarantees.
