Seishirou was well acquainted with apathy. He’d never felt any other emotion long enough to be able to identify it, much less experience it. He knew physical pain, but he was also adept at ignoring it. He had even felt physical satisfaction. Not pleasure, no, the companionship and connection required to achieve pleasure was something he never had a desire for. Now he was feeling a whole new sensation. Slumped against Subaru with the younger man’s hand thrust through his chest, he knew numbness. With that numbness, came clarity. He had been unaware of even being confused until the instant when Hokuto’s spell took effect and Subaru’s hand slid through his skin, between his ribs, piercing his lung before emerging from his back. Then, a split second later, the confusion was gone and replaced with something like surprise.
He had lied to Subaru. That was nothing new. Lying was almost second nature to the Sakurazukamori. No, what surprised Seishirou was the realization that he had lost the Bet without ever being aware of it.
That year, nine years ago, Subaru had made him feel. Seishirou had just never recognized the sensations for what they were, having spent the last 23 years of his life feeling nothing at all. He’d just assumed that his focus on Subaru was born from his desire to carry out the Bet. Or perhaps it was even a child’s possessiveness of his favorite plaything. The heat in his chest when Subaru was close to him, he had passed off as a physical anomaly and ignored. He protected him because those were the conditions of the Bet. He had never once thought to associate any of his actions to the abstract notion of “love.”
“What the head cannot recall, the body remembers.” He couldn’t think of who had said that to him at the moment, but it rang true. Nine years ago he had stood over Subaru’s broken form, fully intending to finish what he had started, but he’d hesitated. In his mind he saw his hand sliding easily through Subaru’s chest, but his body would not move. The distraction was the only reason the 12th Sumeragi Head had been able to break the maboroshi.
Huh. How inconvenient. Death was giving him all sorts of insights that would have been more useful at an earlier date
For the first time in his life, Sakurazuka Seishirou felt regret. He knew the best way to die was at the hands of the one he loved the most but he thought that maybe living together would have been even better.
His impending death was also gifting him with new physical sensations that he could have done without. Like this sudden inability to move his arm or speak easily. His sight, already impaired with his lack of depth perception, was beginning to develop shadows at the corners of his vision.
“Subaru-kun…” such familiar syllables fell off his tongue like stones, strained and softer than he would have liked them to be.
“I…lied to…you.”
The shadows grew deeper and darker, encroaching on his line of sight until all he could see was wide green eyes and a white coat splattered with blood.
One last thing. He had to ensure that Subaru knew what he was really talking about.
“You won.”
And with that, everything went black.
