Beckett Background Theory
So I was going to do this big theory post about Beckett's past, but it kinda got compressed into a few ideas. This is mostly because I had RL stuff that got in the way (plus some Doctor Who fangirling that I failed to anticipate). Any who, onward!
Okay, so it was established by Castle in the pilot that our dear detective grew up in Manhattan, came from money and lost someone important to her. Also, in Hedge Fund Homeboys, Kate tells the kids that she went to York and later explains to Castle that she was lying. Though I must say, isn't it possible that that was the lie? I don't live in New York personally, but if your family had money why would they let their kid(s) go to public school? Sounds fishy.
Now I want to get into the whole 'someone close to her died' thing, since that's the whole point of this post. The way I see it there are three possible options: parents (one or both), a sibling or a boyfriend/fiance. I don't think a parent is very likely. But it's possible - she strikes me as having a strong drive towards the murder and I know that I'd be strongly compelled if my mom or dad was murdered. Although even if its not her parents then I think that there's something there - estrangement perhaps? A sibling is possible, especially a younger sibling. Having a baby sister/brother get killed would not only tear up the family, but also leave Kate (as the older sister) feeling guilty. The theory I'm actually leaning towards is boyfriend/fiance. My main reasoning for this is Kate's reaction in Nanny McDead. She seemed just fine answering Castle's questions until he asked her if she'd ever been close to marriage, then she just clams up and becomes uncomfortable. It's possible that she reacted that way because she never has been that close to someone, but I think tragedy or at least a bad break-up is more likely. Another option that I'm considering as I write this is the best-friend option. I just don't know if it would be enough to drive her into a career as a cop. Maybe someone that she'd known her whole life and considered a sister (or brother), but I don't know if I'd buy just the friend angle...I'll have to think more on this one.
To sum up - I'm pretty sure that Kate did go to private school, went to college, and that she'd been in love with a man who got killed. Oh, I also want to add that I think it was probably a serial killer that did it. Why, you ask? In the pilot its mentioned that Kate has a pension for the 'freaky ones' and she seems to have studied killers rather extensively. Add in the 'unsolved' aspect of the murder and volia! And if I'm right - we'll probably end up seeing the return of said serial killer in the *crosses fingers* second season. That's all for now. 50 minutes and counting!
