Homophones

Arrrgggghhhh.... homophones are driving me crazy! It all started at Christmas, when my whole extended family was sitting at a restaurant, and we started naming sets of homophones (words that sound the same, mean different things, and are spelled differently). And I started recording them, and now I can't quit ( Read more... )

Ooh! Good one, Kara! I think I need to change my "no contractions" rule, because I see that I've included "we'd" and "we'll" in other sets... So that way, I can keep them and use your new one, too! :D 394!!!

that's a contraction ;)

Do Affects and Effects really sound the same? I always pronounce them differently *blink*

Hmmm... yeah, I was a little unsure about that one, too...
When I use "affect" to mean "expression, demeanor," then it definitely sounds different; but when "affect" is used as verb -- "This will affect our homophone list" -- and "effect" is used as a noun -- "What effect will this have on our homophone list?" -- most people pronounce them the same. (I actually asked ten people to read those two sentences aloud (HEY! Aloud - Allowed :D:D:D) *Ahem* As I was saying before I so rudely interrupted myself, I got several people to read the words aloud, in the context of sentences, and I didn't discern any difference in pronunciation. Perhaps that's just our Midwest twang, though! :LOL So if a majority of those of you from different regions weigh in in favor of deleting that particular pair, I'll certainly do so. (Please don't, though, 'cause I'm shooting for 400! :P)
