Family:
Ole Kierkegaard. Born 1960. Preben's father. As with his sons, a tall, blond man. Quiet and somewhat stoic, after the death of his wife he became somewhat withdrawn. He's a specialty carpenter, carving decorative mantels, banisters, that kind of thing. He and Preben are largely estranged, although they send periodic letters (Ole doesn't believe in e-mail) and birthday greetings.
Margaret Kierkegaard (née Henriksen). Born 1958, died 2002. Preben's mother. She died suddenly of a brain aneurism when Preben was fifteen. Contrary to her husband, she was outgoing and vivacious. Preben tends to take after her. They were very close.
Berwald Kierkegaard*. Born 1985. Preben's (younger) twin brother. Despite this, they don't share the same birthday as Preben was born at 11:46 PM on 5 June and Berwald was born twenty minutes later-12:06 AM, 6 June. The two are on the surface very different, but share the same stubbornness, bossiness, and habit of getting weird thoughts stuck in their head. They were extremely close as children, but began to grow apart after their mother's death. Berwald got engaged and moved away at 19; this caused a fight where Preben severely beat him in an explosive loss of temper. They have not spoken in the seven years since.
* while there are obvious allusions to Sweden in all this, if a Sweden ever joins Reims, I will change the name of the brother, as with the existence of the in-law if need be.
Unknown In-Law. Born ???? Preben's sister-in-law, a Finnish woman Preben has never met or spoken to. He's not even sure what her name is, or if he has any nieces or nephews.
Apartment:
Preben rents a place in the faculty apartments, which I imagine looks something like this:
It's too big for him, but very well furnished: he saves up and buys things piece by piece, obsessively matching and selecting everything. What he doesn't have yet, he already has picked out and ready to order. He does not realize this is unusual.
The living/dining room has cream/yellow walls, wood floor stained as dark as possible. Dining room set, Living room looks something like this but with matching colors. He hasn't yet bought a TV, but he has a stand all ready.
The kitchen is more generic; he hasn't gotten to it yet. The smaller of the two bedrooms is completely untouched and he uses it for storage. The bathroom has been reworked nicely. As for the bedroom… it will look like this eventually, but for now he sleeps in a cheap twin bed. Hasn't even started yet. When he has girls guests over, he keeps them in the main room. The bedroom is his next project, though!
Also the balcony has some potted plants and a lawn chair.
Yes, Preben's apartment looks like a designer catalog, what else is new. He's pretty tidy for a guy in his 20s, and eats pretty well too. His fridge is also full of beer, but what else do you expect?
