CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: The Kingdom of Denmark Preben Kierkegaard
CANON: Axis Powers Hetalia

AGE: 26
GENDER: Male

TENURE: This is his 1st year.
SUBJECT/POSITION: Architecture (11th/12th grades only); woodworking/shop for younger grades.
RESIDENCE: Academy housing.

APPEARANCE: Denmark/Preben is a boyishly handsome young man with a perpetual grin. He has rather typically 'Nordic' features-pale blond hair, blue eyes, a tall stature, narrow nose, and pale skin (although he runs around outside a lot, leaving a slight tan). He's athletic and fit, and tends to dress well if simply in bright colors and jeans.

PERSONALITY: You know that guy who always has to be in the middle of things? That's Preben. If he's not the center of attention, he's trying to elbow his way into whatever the center is. He wants to be friends with everyone, be noticed by everyone, and be involved with everyone. On the downside, he can be selfish, annoying, and his cheerful neediness can make him a pain in the ass. But his enthusiasm can be infectious, and he has a certain charm.

Preben is a bit of a flake, although he's not stupid-he just doesn't usually bother thinking things through, especially when they're exciting or otherwise interesting to him. Which is most things. His words, his actions-everything about him is a little bit thoughtless, although he never intends to be rude or mean. Not that he can't be rude, sometimes: but it's an accident, and if he's called on it, he'll be both surprised and sorry. He doesn't ever want to hurt people-he's just tactless and talks without thinking.

He loves people, and underneath his hyperactivity is a real desire to help and to take care of others. He'd do anything to help someone who needed it and can be incredibly protective, and the fastest and best way to anger him is to threaten someone he cares about, someone that is "his." While most insults just roll off his back, this is one slight that he will always get worked up over. But on the plus side, it makes him an extremely devoted friend, brother, or teacher; he loves everyone and everything, and is incapable of divorcing his emotions from his actions and thoughts.

Preben does have his flaws-besides the annoying thing. He is undoubtedly possessive of people, even if not in an abusive or creepy way: if he likes someone, he simply wants them to be with him forever, and has issues with being "abandoned." He also can have a very, very nasty temper, when sufficiently provoked: a violent one. He works very hard to control that, and has had counseling for it. Most things don't bother him and he rarely gets worked up for more than a minute: if something really bothers him, he's much more likely to ignore or deny it than admit it's making him mad. Him losing his temper is very rare.

He also… well, thinks he's great. He thinks he's super nice, generous, fun to be around, good looking, a great person in every way. And he's certainly not a bad one! But he can be very arrogant, and that goes back to his clingy possessiveness-and to his nurturing, take-care-of-people side. In other words, he's bossy. He thinks he knows best and he believes he should be listened to. If he's ignored he doesn't usually get worked up-but if he's outright defied, he's less than pleased. He has a lot of pride, and doesn't like it or his personality questioned-things like calling him a liar bother him. Even when the person doing it is right. He's stubborn as all hell when he decides to be, although he can sometimes channel it into amazing bursts of productivity and will. Usually it just makes him, well, stubborn.

COMPUTER APTITUDE: NOT VERY HIGH. He can do all basic things and play computer games, but his idea of coding is "changing the font when you're writing something by clicking one in the list."

AU HISTORY: Preben was born in Roskilde, Denmark, the elder of twin brothers. His mother stayed at home, and his father did specialty carpentry-carving fancy banisters and mantles and piecework for homes of the wealthy, that kind of thing. From an early age Preben and his brother would watch their father at work, and both learned how to make their own basic things-little footstools and so on-at a young age. Preben's parents believed strongly that kids should learn to make things with their hands, so he also learned how to cook, garden, and even sew, just as a matter of course.

(He pretty much hated the sewing, but he can cook and garden to this day. Although he's pretty lazy.)

As sometimes happens, each of Preben's parents had a "favorite" child. Preben was his mother's child, his brother was his father's. As for the brothers, although they had wildly different personalities, they were one another's best friends. They'd bicker and fight all the time, and competed over everything, but they loved one another dearly. Preben's childhood was pretty uneventful and normal.

When he was fifteen, his mother suddenly died-brain aneurism. Of course the whole family was devastated, but Preben took it especially hard. He'd loved his mother and had a very close bond with her-they were both outgoing and talkative, unlike Preben's more stoic father and brother. And because they were more stoic, he started to feel after her death that they didn't "care" as much as he did.

Preben started lashing out against his family and friends, doing poorly in school, smoking and drinking, you name it, he was a rebellious teenager and did it. His fights with his brother started getting more vicious and personal-his brother claimed Preben was just being immature (which was true), but Preben wanted his twin's support and again felt like he had no one. Their father, for his part, had become even more quiet and detached after his wife's death.

While Preben calmed down about this, a large rift had been formed between him and his father and brother. Things were more peaceful, but the ease of life before his mother's death never returned. Between the brothers especially things were tense, and Preben started spending most of his time away from home, with his new friends and girlfriends.

When he finished gymnasium (specialized high school) a few years later, Preben's brother very suddenly announced that he was engaged and moving to Finland to get married in a month. Preben had heard absolutely nothing about any of this, and took it very, very badly. Although their relationship had been rough, Preben had always assumed that, as twins, they would always be together. To be kept out of the loop and be abandoned, to 'lose' another family member, was more than he could take. All his life Preben had had a bad temper, and it finally exploded out of him. In the resulting fight, he broke his brother's arm, nose, and jaw, while sustaining lesser injuries himself.

After that, his father quietly asked him to move out. No charges were pressed, but in return, he was to make his own way and life. Preben was devastated. He already felt deep regret for his actions; now he was being 'abandoned' again. But no matter how much he apologized and begged, his father stood firm, telling him that in his current state he couldn't be around the family and he needed to get his act together-and pointing out some breathing room might be good for him as well.

Preben didn't have any real options. He'd already been accepted into a school to study architecture; his father had promised to pay for it as long as Preben didn't waste the opportunity (or call home for a while). Not having a lot of other options, Preben went. He spent the first few months drinking and partying, but soon met a teacher, Hr. Andersen, who he became very close to. He ended up confiding in him, telling him everything, leaning on him for support. It was a difficult time, but finally having someone he could talk to properly helped him a lot. On Andersen's suggestion, Preben also started seeing a therapist about his temper (and again to have someone to talk to). It was embarrassing at first, but it helped, and he very quickly bounced back to almost-normal. He now has a tense but civil relationship with his father… but hasn't spoken to his brother since their fight. He simply tries to ignore that entire issue; he's great at repression. But he did mature quite a bit after losing his family-even if he's too stubborn/prideful to contact his brother, he is honestly repentant and would sooner die than let it or anything like it happen again, even though he recognizes his relationship with his family will never be as good as it once was.

Preben graduated from gymnasium at 19 and continued studying architecture. Two years into his five year study-a year after he met Andersen and started therapy-he decided that he wanted to be a teacher instead. Andersen had helped him like no one else, and he wanted to be able to help people like that as well. He also wanted to be an architect-so, he just decided to do both. It wasn't exactly easy, and okay, his grades weren't top of the class-but he did it, finishing his architecture studies at 24 and qualifying as a teacher half a year later. He began applying for teaching positions but had trouble securing one with his lack of practical experience (having never worked as an architect, his main study), and applied to Reims on a whim.

He was surprised and pleased to get the job, liking the idea of a change of scenery, a fresh start away from home, and-best of all-an escape from crappy dorms and 12-hour study sessions. At last.DANISH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM TIMELINE:

Public school: 6-16
Age 15: mother's death.
Gymnasium: 16-19.
Graduation. Fight with his brother.
Architect school: 19-24.
Educator school: 21-25. (Only takes 3 years officially, but took him a bit longer due to his primary study.)

JUSTIFICATION: Being a fully qualified teacher, and also being technically qualified as an architect, and managing through sheer stubbornness to complete them both at once. In addition, growing up in Denmark has left Preben fluent in not only Danish but also English and German; he took French in school and can get by in Norwegian and Swedish-multiple language fluency comes in handy at international schools! He also gave a very good interview, showing off his natural charm to his advantage (and skipping over his family history, noting only that his low grades his first year of university were due to his mother's death). Those are the IC history reasons.

Now in general terms-In history, Denmark has always taken incredibly good care of his people, which leads to the assumption that he likes taking care of people period; he's evacuated entire populations to protect them. In canon, Denmark is also shown to be a "big brother" kind of character, wanting to protect (if kind of control) his siblings. I think that all this leads easily into both teaching as something Denmark would want to do to help people, and as something he'd like to do because he's bossy and likes being in charge. Danes are also famous for their architecture (the Sydney Opera House was designed by a Dane) and design (the egg chair!), leading to his choice in study/subject. Danes are hard workers and endlessly persistent, and Denmark has in canon shown as much enthusiasm for work (selling things) as hobbies (drinking).

(He might not be the best teacher ever, but by god he would try.)

STUDENTS!!!!! ATTENTION!!!!

After some of you, have said the homework is too much, I am changing the assignment for the AP Design class. Your new one is, due Monday, design a pub. Remember what we talked about in class about different styles for different things, a pub is very different from a bar or club or saloon, or whatever they are called in the USA! Pubs are the kind of places you go to with friends, to watch a football game with friends, and drink beer, good Danish beer and not the shit here, not that you guys should know that it is shit, because you are too young. Regardless of this, a pub should have a 'friendly' kind of feel, and I want to see a friendly, and creative, design that I would like to go drinking in!

Remember that, anyone can design a square house! :)

Design a pub for me!
For Monday!

- Preben (Hr Kierkegaard)

ps I do not mind if you guys call me Preben but please learn, to at least spell my family name. K I E R K E G A A R D. :)

LOG/3RD PERSON SAMPLE:

Preben's office was small and a mess. Of course, he was lucky he even had an office-he was pretty sure it had once been a janitor's closet-but it was directly connected to the shop class and that made it his. At least no one had yet tried to kick him out yet.

He'd never had an office before, so he'd gotten excited about it. Built a small desk himself-the normal size wouldn't fit-and painted it a cheerful yellow to make it brighter, found some real-looking plastic plants, hung football posters-and then promptly covered the whole thing in paperwork. Fuck, he was the shop teacher. Where did all this paper come from?

Still, it was his and he loved it, even though it smelled weird and was always hot. He was sitting and looking over some of his student's homework with a beer, which he planned to pretend was soda if he was caught. Some of these layouts were pretty fun. One boy had even added furniture to his-cutting it out of a magazine. Preben noticed one of the chairs was from IKEA and deducted a point. There was no reason he couldn't also teach his students good taste, after all. 99/100 would teach him. Smiling to himself, he went on to the next design, and took another drink. It was warm. He might have to try and figure out how to cram a cooler in here next.
