This makes me think of Rose, the "upper house parlor maid" in "Upstairs, Downstairs," explaining to...Daisy, was it, when she started working at 165 Eaton Place, about the organization of Miss Elizabeth's wardrobe necessities:
"Regular corsets, upper left [drawer of a dresser]; corset laces, upper right. "Dress silk corsets, middle left; corset laces, middle right. "Chemises, bottom right [drawer]; night dresses, bottom left."
Don't feel too bad, though, even though it's frustrating. An awful lot of us seem to be spending an awful lot of time trying to locate things we thought for certain we had put in a given specific place, so you've got a boadload of company.
