Storm Results

For those that do not know, I live in Orlando Florida.
I am sure that you have heard by now that a hurricane recently rolled through our neck of the woods (Hurricane Charley: Friday, August 13, 2004).

I would like everyone to know that me and my family survived the storm without any personal injuries, but it did give us quite a scare!

I would like to say that the National Hurricane Center did a horrible job at tracking this hurricane... If you watched any of the national weather services (like the Weather Channel), you would have seen that the storm was only supposed to get up to about 45-55mph in my area. If it were not for all the local weather stations saying that it was going to be MUCH stronger, you may not have taken any precautions at all (I almost didn't...).
We did not quite pass through the "eye" of the hurricane, but we must have been VERY close! We had sustained winds in the area of 100mph!
If we had not taken some precautions like boarding up some of the windows etc... we could have suffered MUCH more damage than we did!

So, anyways, damage synopses:
  • Roughly 1/2 the tiles on our roof were torn off by the wind, and in some areas even the tar-paper was torn off, leaving bare wood exposed.
  • Water damage to ceilings and personal items from rain coming in through the now exposed roof.
  • The screen of the pool enclosure was torn to shreds.
  • Miscellaneous damage from wind, branches, rocks, and roof-tiles scratching and denting vehicles.
  • One major dent on the side of my car, breaking/jamming the locking mechanism, preventing the driver's door from opening from either side.

We had lost power at about 8pm on friday night, and the power did not come back on until monday night at roughly the same time. We were also without telephone service all this time, and the phones came back on just a little before the power did. (yes we have a land-line, so we could make calls without electricity).

I hooked my computer up after the power came back on and somehow got lucky and had the computer on when the power decided to spike or something from the crews still working on the lines, and managed to fry my power supply (i hope that is all that is fried), I have bought replacement parts and will try to get my computer working again this evening.

We are now just waiting for the insurance adjusters to come and asses the damage so we can see how much they will pay for repairs...

But the most important thing is that we are alive, and uninjured, and I hope that all of my friends are unhurt as-well.
