i bookmarked that video it made some deep points.
i think society is putting it in their heads.

i did own several white barbies as well as all the other latina .. black .. etc ones. not for their color though but i was just a barbie collector (lol) and everyone would buy me the birthday barbies .. or the holiday ones .. the collectable ones no matter what color.

& my nieces who are mixed also - i hate to buy them barbies now because people make a big deal over the color they play with but we let them choose and usually they`re not choosing based on colors its based on what shes wearing or what comes with her ..

I'm not able to pull up the video, but not only children but grown people too, think light is better, and black is not. We all watch tv, we all see what is accepted the most in the media. That's where it comes from. We are feed this surreal idea of what is beautiful each time we tune in to the media, and when we look at the edited magazine covers that appear to have the perfect look.

I didn't like Barbie's mainly because of the size. Realtives would buy em' for me though. I had white and black ones. I just loved combing the hair. THe hair was the same on the white and black ones. So pretty much barbie wasn't my choice, but when i did pick a doll i chose a black noe, if that was an option. why because it was kind of familar to me, maybe because my parents guided me to do it. and when I did have the white dolls I really didn't notice color. They were just dolls. My favorite doll wasn't even a white or black doll it was tan colored.

I grew up without barbies or dolls cuz they just weren't my thing. I am black & white..mostly black..and was "raised black" but the baby doll thing confused me, I'm look hispanic but I know I'm not...none of them babies looked like they could be mine lol..

However, my little sister who is MUCH MUCH MUCH darker than me..some times looks full black (her father is dark, mine is light http://myspace-711.vo.llnwd.net/00972/11/73/972493711_l.jpg theres a pic of her) is a huge barbie and baby doll fan!

She has never liked black barbie dolls. The reason being, they're just not as cute as the white, latin, or mixed ones. That shit is true! They make the hair look extremely ugly like a terrible hair weave, the lips are bigger, the skin is dark with fuckin pink and blue eyeshadow..wtf? However, she only has black baby dolls...because they're cute..whereas finding a cute black barbie doll is basically impossible..

I think that one of the problems is that girls are constantly reminding themselves of what "everybody" perceives as beautiful which is far from the truth. I think that if you constantly say things, you eventually end up believing the things you say...like actually believing the lies a person tells after a time. It all boils down to what we demand is beautiful. We have to tell our younger generation...and older for that matter that all shades, texture of hair, and shapes are beautiful...not just continue to remind ourselves what we "think" people see as beautiful. This is a task for the strong willed people who aren't afraid to go agianst the "norm" which are few and far between.

Part of this line of thinking is due to society dictating what is considered "beautiful". Let's be honest, how many brown-skinned or dark-skinned girls do you see on the cover of magazines or on TV, etc. etc.? Not many, you can probably count on one hand. And it does not help your mindset when that is all that you see and that idea seems to be constantly reinforced within your own community. Little girls need to be shown that everyone is beautiful in their own way regardless of shape, size or color. Cause let me tell you, I am beautiful and you cannot tell me otherwise honey.
