Well, you did offer me your soul in exchange for the linen. I think that makes you the evil half, because you were willing to give away your soul for fabric. ;)

And, weren't there going to be pictures from the weekend?

I miss you already. Are you coming to Twelfth Night?

I have the bits of an email to you in the back of my mind. What is your email address?

It doesn't make me evil! It just makes me weak. :)

My email address is. um. shhhhh, okay? It's carmody2002 (at) yahoo.com. Don't tell everybody. In fact, eat this post after you read it, just to be safe.

Pictures. Yeah. That might not happen until I go home for the weekend on Tuesday, because my aunt's internet is so slow it would take about 30 minutes to upload a single photo. I don't have that kind of patience. Or, I suppose, I could use this impetus to go buy ink for my printer, and mail you the photos. Hm. Choices, choices, choices.

Huh. Linen is usually very strong and should pass the punch test in 2-4 layers. To be using 5+ and still not pass is odd. Is it very tin? Did you try alternating the orientation of the linen? How was your tension on the linen?

It's a tablecloth weave linen/cotton blend. I can see that I wasn't very specific. I keep forgetting that I have friends who actually worship linen, so passing off a linen/cotton blend doesn't work with you guys- you know about the magical mystical secrets of linen. :)

Plus, it's a tablecloth weave that's supposed to look rustic, I guess, so it's kind of loose. Does that make sense? I mean, there are no holes in the weave, but it's kind of a weak weave, once you get over the thickness of the thread. Does any of that make sense? I know I'm not using the correct terms.

Ah, terminology time!

A "loose" weave:
it's kind of a weak weave, once you get over the thickness of the thread.

You can describe this in terms of its "thread count." This is literally the number of threads per unit of length of fabric. You usually see this in things like bedsheets and tableclothes. Bedclothes with threadcounts down near 250 are very cheap, often rough, and as you describe, "weak." Fine sheets will run 600-1000 threads per inch and feel very smooth and soft and will generally be stronger and much more expensive.

The cotton content will make the fabric weaker, but it was probably more due to problems with the weave.

Sometimes a weak fabric can be used by alternating the orientation of the laters. ie: one layer straight up and down ([) and next layer on a diagonal (/) and the following horizontal (-) and the next layer on a diagonal again (\), if needed.

Make sense?

well I hate to burst your bubble
but much of your hood won't be seen a lot because you will be wearing a fencing mask while fighting
and the hood will be down or off while not fighting

I tell you from experience that is NOT fun. putting on a fencing hood that somebody else was just wearing and fencing in....ick
