Chapter 12
It had been a few hours and still Heechul heard nothing fom Sulli. Sure they had been fighting but the girl didn't have anything against Donghae. Atleast, not that Heechul knew of. For the 5th time since he sent the text he checked Donghae's phone before placing it back into his pocket.
"Hyung!"
Donghae's voiced pierced through Heechul's thoughts.
"What!?" Heechul asked, head snapping in Donghae's direction.
"Can I have my phone back?" Donghae asked.
"I'm using it," Heechul replied.
"Why can't you use your own?"
"Are you questioning my authority?"
"N,no but... Jessica might call!" Donghae whined.
"Hyung, give Hae back his phone please," Sungmin sighed, rubbing his ear. "I'm getting tired of the whining."
There were a few murmurs of agreement as well and Heechul merely ignored them as Donghae's phone began to buzz in his pants. Heechul pulled it out but was disappointed to see Jessica's name on the display. He reluctantly gave it to Donghae who was leaning over his shoulder to look.
"Yay!" Donghae cheered and answered it.
Heechul found himself aimless for the rest of the day. By the end of practice that afternoon he found himself again checking the contents of Donghae's (stolen) phone for a return message from Sulli. When there was nothing Heechul found himself torn between annoyance and worry. Was Amber really so bad off? He couldn't help but wonder. Or was it because Sulli was that upset?
Well, of course she would be if she had true feelings for him but the fact of the matter was she didn't. She couldn't. And he couldn't have anything for her. It was impossible. So then why was he feeling so angry?
With a growl he dialed her number and put the phone to his ear waiting for her to pick up. It took about 4 rings before the phone was answered by a voice that made his blood run cold.
"Hello," the male voice said. "Hyung?"
Heechul recognized it. It was Taemin but why did he have her phone? Did she run to him after their fight. Heechul felt hollow. Was it really that easy for her after saying, screaming that she liked him to run so quickly to Taemin.
He swallowed the lump in his throat.
"So you're answering her phone now, huh?"
He meant for it to come out jokingly. He even tried to force a smile to his face and through the phone but even he felt the grimace on his lip and heard the bitterness of his words.
"Heechul Hyung?" Taemin said.
And before he could even think the words he said next flew out of his mouth.
"Stay away from her..."
"Hy,hyung!"
"I said stay away from her!" Heechul growled out a little louder.
There was a silence before Taemin replied, "I don't think you have the right to be telling me that."
"You--"
Heechul didn't have the chance to finish as Taemin had already hung up.
----
Taemin's heart was beating so fast as he sat there on his bed, staring down at Sulli's phone in his hand. Something told him not to pick it up but seeing Donghae calling so many times, Taemin decided to finally pick up. He felt silly to think it wouldn't be Heechul. There were few things in the world Taemin was afraid of. Taemin was probably the only one in SHINee brave enough to cross a grouchy Key. Heechul was defintiely something he didn't want to deal with but it was probably an inevitability now.
The phone buzzed with an incoming call and Donghae's name appeared on the display sending a shiver down Taemin's spine. Taemin ignored the call and the turned off the phone. There were only two ways to go at that point: stay in his room and hope the storm will pass by or confront matter directly. For Sulli's sake he knew which path he'd take.
-----
Amber hobbled on her crutches out of the hospital, a doting Krystal at her side. Victoria was chatting on the phone with their manager and Sulli and Luna were clearing space for their injured member in the van which was stopped in front.
"Come on guys," Krystal said to Luna. "Don't keep her standing."
"Krystal I have crutches, I can stand just fine," Amber rolled her eyes.
"Does it still hurt?" Sulli asked.
"Like a bitch," Amber said throwing her head back and closing her eyes. "I think the pain medicine is wearing off too."
"Speaking of pain medicine who's gonna pick it up frmo the phramacy?" Sulli asked.
"NOT IT!" Luna and Krystal both raised their hands and shouted in unison.
------
Sulli did care about Amber's injury. In fact as soon as she got to the hospital all of her problems with Heechul seemed to leave her mind as she became focused solely on Amber's condition. But as things seemed to calm down and they began their trek home with Amber considered "ok" Sulli found that the pain in her heart was once again rising to the forefront of her emotions.
She still felt cheated and manipulated. She was toyed with by a man she trusted. She had hoped his feelings were genuine. Even if she always felt maybe he didn't like her as much as she liked him she hoped there was at least a bit of reciprocation on his part. Now she felt as if she was just a vessel, a thing to be used. Did it matter who it was? Would he have done the same thing to anyone willing to be a replacement?
Sulli arrived at the building with the bag of medicine in tow happy to finally be able to escape into the privacy of her room. She didn't want to shed anymore tears but it seemed inevitable. Thankfully with everyone focused on Amber she was sure it wouldn't be too hard.
She entered her building without even taking note that there were any visitors in the lobby as she began to check the mailbox until she felt the presense of someone beside her. She looked up and was shocked to see Heechul standing right there, casually as if nothing had happened earleir in the day. Her mouth opened but before she was able to he spoke.
"Why haven't you been answering your phone?" Heechul asked in a low tone which didn't betray a single emotion.
"Oppa," she asked, trying her best to keep her voice as even as his. "Why are you here?"
"I asked you a question," Heechul replied.
"And I asked you one too. Can you stop playing games with me?"
"I'm not playing games? Now answer my question."
Sulli figured the sooner she answered his question the sooner she'd figure out his reason for being there.
"Oppa, I was in the hospital. That's why I didn't answer my phone. Amber's ankle is sprained."
Heechul shook his head, a slight smirk tugging at his lips, "Then let me see your phone."
Sulli stared up at Heechul incredulously before beginning to dig in her bag. She was searching in earnest but no matter how much she looked it wasn't there. She set her bag on the counterspace where the mail boxes were, searching but it wasn't there. She had to be searching for more than a minute. When suddenly BAM! Heechul slammed his hand down on the counter startling Sulli into spilling the contents of her bag onto the marble floor.
"Can you stop fucking pretending you don't know where your damn phone is? Why won't you just fucking admit that you were with Taemin!?"
Startled, Sulli looked up with wide eyes, "Oppa what, what are you--"
He pushed her against the wall gripping aginst her shoulder tightly, not noticing the way his fingers dug into her painfully or the way she squirmed.
"You're a fucking liar!" he spat. "You don't like me. Why did you even say it?"
"Oppa!" Sulli's hands flew up to where he was holding her against the wall.
"You lied! Why won't you admit it?"
"I didn't lie!" Sulli managed to spit out, though her mind was going crazy, not knowing what exactly was going on. Why was Heechul accusing her or lying when he was the one who strung her along the entire time? She was the only who had been straightforward about her feelings from the outset.
"Why does he have your phone?"
"I don't know!" Sulli retorted, tears forming in her eyes.
"Liar!"
"Stop calling me a liar!" Sulli used her strength to pull herself from his grip and crouching on the ground began to pick up the items from the floor that spilled put of her bag, including the bottle of Amber's medicine.
She was hyper aware of the way he was watching her every moment. Despite the sunglasses he wore she felt his eyes follow her as she picked up a seemingly endless pile of convinience store reciepts, having been stashed in her purse lazily for the past month.
After a moment he joined her, picking the items up. They worked wordlessly and finally everything was back in the bag. The only sounds in the lobby came fom the shuffling of items and the sniffles coming from Sulli as they worked. Finally they both stood and she didn't bother to look up as he handed her the little paperbag that held Amber's medicine. She took it with both hands.
"Thank you," she said.
"Sulli-ah, I... I..."
"Why are you here?" she asked again, looking with tear strained eyes. "And don't say it's about the stupid phone because you made it clear you don't want anything to do with me."
"Don't talk to Taemin," Heechul replied.
"What?" Sulli asked.
"Sulli-ah, don't you like me?" Heechul asked, grabbing her arm.
"Oppa..." Sulli began. "You already know how I--"
"I just need to hear you say it," Heechul said.
"I like you. I really like you."
Not even had Sulli finished speaking before he pulled her close, crushing her in a hug, suddenly overwhelmed by the intensity of his feelings of posession.
"Look only at me. I can't stand the thought of you with another man. It makes me crazy."
"Heechul..."
"Promise me... no other man can feel you like I do no other man can kiss you like I do. For now please don't leave me, please!"
He needed her more than she would ever know and it scared him. She was his anchor. No one else could make him feel like she did. No woman could smile at him the way she did or kiss him the way she did. No woman could make his heart feel alive again. Why couldn't she understand him?
He hugged her tighter, burying his face in her hair.
And as for Sulli she stood there, rooted to her spot. If she was confused before she was more confused than ever now. Just earlier that day he said he didn't like her.
'Don't leave' he said. If it were up to her she would have never left in the first place. It made no sense and she felt her heart ache only deepen with his words. It was just more games right? And he demanded to hear the words from her but did she have the same right to demand the same of him. She felt there was a delicate web being spun around them and if she made one wrong move she risked losing him forever.
It hurt so much being held right there and then, remembering the cruel words from that morning. But she was scared to question a thing. He didn't apologize, he didn't clerify a thing. He merely held her, pressing a few soft kisses against her temple before letting go.
"Why are you doing this?" Sulli asked.
"What?" Heechul asked.
"Leading me on... playing these games. I like you, but you don't like me. So why do this? You think I want to have you as some sort of consolation prize?" Sulli looked up at Heechul. "Do you?"
"Sulli-ah..." Heechul said.
"No, listen. I like you. I have no problems saying it because it's the truth. But I won't take shit from you. I never lied to you and I won't start now. Is it too much to expect the same from you?"
"Sulli..." Heechul grabbed Sulli's face bringing it closer to connect for a kiss but she knocked his hands away.
"Stop it. Just stop," Sulli turned and went towards the elevator repeatedly pushing the button to go up.
Immedietly the elevator doors flew open and Sulli disappeared inside leaving Heechul standing there alone.
