The trick with kanji is their subtle meanings. Since kanji arent like words, but more like ideas, a word can have many different kanji for different implications. As for the word "calm" there are 9 different kanji that I can find. The first kanji you have listed there means "soothe; calm; pacify". It's the verb form, so maybe not what you're looking for. The second one means "reign; be at peace; calm down; subdue; quell; govt; cure; heal; rule; conserve" which is a _lot_ all roled into one. Thats the problem w./ translating from kanji to english, it's hard to imagine that the one symbol means all those things at once, but to people who read them, its almost like seeing a picture and just understanding the meaning
