Why, Heroes, why do you do this to me? A perfectly interesting, meta-worthy episode completely overshadowed (for anal-retenttive nit-pickers like me) by the riduculous way you've mangled Sylar's shape-shifting power. I have two major problems with it: first of all, it requires DNA. Did original shape-shifter actually have he opporunity to get Sylar and Danko DNA before he turned into them at the bar? Second, how do you explain he goddamn clothes?!?!?! How does absorbing DNA allow you to replicate their wardrobe? This is stupid! If this is genuinely a physical transformation, as the magic tooth (by the way, how fucking gross was that? Ugh! I have nightmares about losing teeth.) would seem to suggest, there is no way that clothing should be generated by a change. Doesn't anyone on staff have critical thinking skills? Words can not express how much this annoys me.
For God's sake, please watch Supernatural episodes "Skin" "Nightshifter" and "Monster Movie." They all handle the shape shifer in a reasonably coherent way. (i.e. the shifter actually has to change clothes.) Speaking of SPN, did anyone else expect to see eye flare when Sylar-as-Nahan turned to face the camera?
Aside from the wardrobe issues, Sylar was pretty fun tonight. His conversations with his mother were practically Oedipal. He also continues to be a raging narcicist. They might be overdoing the crazy, though...I'm not sure how *I'm* supposed to feel about him anymore. Am I rooting for him or against him? I can't even tell. I don't know what his goals are. He kills poor Ron Howard's brother...bad Sylar. Lets Micah go...nice Sylar. Tries to kill Nathan...bad Sylar. Threatens Danko...I might throw him a parade. All the while having conversations with himself as his dead mother and out-emoing Peter. It was exhausting! He has too many issues to fit into one episode. Mommy-issues, Daddy-issues, Identity-issues, Abandonment-issues.
I don't know. Maybe they want us to feel confused because he is confused. (Honestly, this summer I'm going to have to put some serious thought into why I love shows that hurt me. You know...after I get over grieving for whatever characters die on Heroes and SPN.)
I love that Hiro and Ando have finally come to terms. Yay! Hiro accepts Ando as an equal! Yay! Batman and Superman! Yay! Working together as partners! ...And then Hiro gets a headache and a nosebleed...never a good sign. Aneurism? Hiro can't seriously be in danger, can he? Something awful always happens when characers resolve their issues and find happiness. It's just like the soaps.
In what must be considered a bona fide miracle, Matt Parkman actually remembered his powers and used them effectively tonight. First, to listen for the thoughts of the agents in the van, second to hide in plain sight when they stormed the house. That is pretty much unprecedented. Maybe there's hope for him yet. (Or maybe it's a sign of his impending death. Characters always get their shit together right before they're killed off. Damn. I am really psyching myself up for these season finale deaths.)
Speaking of deaths, you know who is not remotely dead? The Bruins! I confess, this review is so short because I spent half the episode flipping back and forth between Heroes and the NHL playoffs. Sometimes I'm just really in the mood to watch grown men shove each other into walls. Not much fighting tonight, though. Sad.
