Yay! Adam's back! I missed him so. He was usually pretty smart, so I think he just single-handedly raised the IQ of the cast (of characters, not actors) about 30 points. And hopefully he'll even replace the fun that has been so missing in Sylar this season. Maybe I'll even write some more fan fiction with him, because I love him that much. (Please, don't let me down.)
So far, this season has left me with many questions. Unfortunately, they aren't so much questions like, "Where is this engaging mystery headed?" as they are, "What have the writers/directors/producers been smoking?" Does NBC employ anyone to check continuity on this show? Does anyone care but me? So many things don't make sense.
The Great List of What-The-Fuck Moments In Season Three
1. Where did Maya's accent go? Last year she barely spoke English, now she's practically a native New Yorker. Speaking of Maya, SHE IS TOTALLY NOT THE SAME CHARACTER SHE WAS LAST YEAR! At all! New accent, new personality...everything. She is going to absolutely ruin the fun over at
Burnt Toast Diner!
2. Why does Future Peter have a scar? Shouldn't he have healed? Sure, I know...you need a visual way for us to tell the difference between the two Peters. (Just in case the slicked-back hair isn't enough. Why is it that the loss of innocence and idealism is best represented visually by slicked back hair, and darker, tighter clothing?) You could just, you know, not dress them the same. Put Present Peter in a lighter color and you don't even have to add a nonsensical scar. We'll be able to figure it out. I promise.
3. Sylar's power causes his hunger for brains. I went on (and on) last week about why I hate this, but here's why it doesn't make sense. Anyone here remember season one? Can I see a show of hands? Ok. Now, was I hallucinating or did they already establish a motivation for Sylar's brain munching way back then? I seem to recall that he spent his childhood with a mother who told him that he wasn't good enough. Then, Papa Suresh comes along and tells him he is special - then takes it all back after he can't figure out what the power is and kicks the pathetic watchmaker out. Sylar then found someone with a power, stole it, and went back to Chandra to show off his shiny new toy. There was no mention of an uncontrollable hunger that existed pre-Chandra. If it had been a part of his power, it would already have been there. I hate all of this retconning to make Sylar a fluffy bunny nice guy. Grrrrr.
4. Now Peter has to actively do something to absorb someone's power? Since when? He previously acquired powers by being in the general vicinity of someone who had them. He absorbed powers from his mother, Nathan, Claire, and Claude without even knowing that it was happening. Logically, he should have Sylar's power already. Back in season one (you know, those episodes that the writers can't remember) he grabbed Sylar and fell off the bleachers with him. Way more contact than he'd had with Claude, who - I think - just bumped into him once. Oh, but that's right, if Peter had absorbed Sylar's power back then, he'd have been craving braaaains for over a year now.
5. Why the hell would Peter have cut Nathan's head open? Unlike Sylar, he can acquire powers without physically poking the brain. Oh, it was because he needed to see what made Nathan tick? Right? Which makes total sense, because he took that symbolic watch apart to see how it wor- ...wait. He didn't have to open the watch up, did he. No, he just looked at the watch and understood it. Not only understood it, but fixed it without physically touching the insides. Apparently it's too much to expect the writers to remember what happened EARLIER THIS SAME EPISODE!
6. Four years in the future, everything is forgiven between Syla- I mean Gabriel and everyone else? So much so that little Noah (*chortle*) is entirely unaware that there could possibly be some tension between his dad and Uncle Peter? (How old was little Noah, anyway. He looked about four to me, which kind of means that Sylar should have impregnated someone about nine months ago.) Apparently, dozens of vicious murders are no problem if you say "I'm sorry, the power made me do it." Or maybe Petrellis can overlook that sort of thing.
Sigh. Let's try to be more positive.
Things I Loved Tonight
1. Parkman's spirit guide is a tortoise! So funny and so appropriate. And I like the combination of Tortoise-Parkman and the Speedster. Maybe her spirit guide would be a hare.
2. Hiro and Ando are working things out! I so want them to be happy. I know I'm carrying too much angst from Supernatural, and I'm begging those of you who don't watch it to just bear with me, but seriously! I need some male bonding! I need trust and cooperation. Secrets make me sad. Hiro and Ando hit the spot tonight. And Ando stood up to Angela! That was freaking fantastic! I wanted him to point out, "By the way, bitch, you lost your half of the formula too, so you're no smarter than Hiro," but we can't have everything, I suppose.
3. Mohinder finally realized that he did something stupid. That-a-boy. At least you can learn from your mistakes. Not soon enough to prevent yourself from transforming into a horrible beast, but still...congrats.
4. Tracy. I'm surprised to say that I actually like her. She has a conscience, which is a novelty around here, and totally unexpected in a politician. I thought she was just going to be a bitch all season, but she actually has some depth of character.
5. Have I mentioned that Adam Monroe is back? ADAM'S BACK! And he has to work with Hiro? So it'll be Hiro, his current best friend who might hate him in the future, and his best friend from the past who hates him right now! Is it wrong that I want to see Adam and Ando bonding over what a jerk Hiro can be? And then maybe joining up to save him from something because they just can't help but love the little punk?
Thing That I Will Reserve Judgment On
This whole natural mutant vs. man-made mutant story line. Honestly, I am already confused about who is what. Nathan and Tracy were created? I'll assume Adam is natural. Considering how difficult the writers have found continuity so far, I have some serious concerns about how they will be able to handle this.
Crack!
HRG wasn't on tonight. Sad. So, I have developed a crack pot theory to explain it:
He was recently de-aged into an infant. So, Future Sylar's "son" Noah was actually his partner. that's why there was no mom around. Sylar took little HRG back to his house and raised him as his own. Claire was pissed off because she wanted custody, but the official method of determining custody in Heroes World is not the courts, but rather the principle of "finder's keepers."
That would kick ass.
No, I am not on drugs.
Really.
Idiot Award
No character was outstandingly stupid this week, so I'm giving this prestigious award to the writers, for all of the reasons listed above. Or, to whoever is responsible for monitoring continuity, if it isn't the writers. Or to the producers or the directors if they're forcing the writers to make changes for dramatic purposes.
Obviously, I don't know too much about the creative process vis-a-vis television production. Still, whoever is causing all the continuity errors, you suck! Stop it!
