I am fascinated by Holden Caulfield. He interests me in a way only a fictional character could. He has a hindsight innocence about him; he knows there is evil and injustice in the world, he bluntly explains several cases, yet his way of looking at the world is with innocent, clear eyes ( Read more... )

I remember really disliking Holden when I read Catcher in the Rye in high school. I always thought the he was a phony himself.

I think you're right in that he wouldn't like you, but probably not because of you. He'd probably find some way for you to be a phony in his eyes, which probably wouldn't be hard for him. I think he thought of everyone besides himself and his sister as a phony.

we are drawn to Holden, though, at this age and point in our lives... I know I was... :)

it's because we are all attached to our childhoods at this age... because reality just hit like a ton of bricks in some way or form...

i've noticed of all my pals who have read that book? that the same types of personalities are extremely intrigued by Holden's character and it makes me curious :P
