Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Bush is planning in handing over control of 6 major US ports to a company owned by the United Arab Emirates? I don't mean to sound discriminatory or prejudice here, but why are we handing our "enemies" the "key" to our country? Yes, I know, they are not all our enemies, so don't hound me on that. But stories ( Read more... )

Not to sound like a conspiracy-theorist, but...

If Bush is pushing THIS HARD for something like this, do you think it's just possible that *someone* out there has *something* on him that is letting them force this on the American people?

Why else would he be pushing for this?

I see no possible explanation other than the possibility that someone out there has leverage on his administration and is using it to their fullest advantage.

Maybe I'm missing something (brain cells, maybe?), but that's my initial reaction.

"But stories have come out about nuclear things being smuggled in through other ports this company owns."

I haven't heard anything about any nuclear smuggling coming through terminals run by Dubai Ports Worldwide. Do you remember where you heard that?

Bottom line is that even if they're in charge of some parts of the ports (since it would be some terminals and not the entire ports they'd be controlling), they would still be subject to the same security measures every other terminal is. And it's not like they're going to be bringing in a bunch of UAE nationals to load and unload ships - I would truly be astonished if DPW managed to break the unions, where no other shipping company has been able to.
I don't think you sound prejudiced for asking, especially given the media coverage. I do think the politicians involved are trying to gain some cheap points by creating a public hysteria, and they're doing us all a disservice.

I read it in one of the newspapers on campus, which didn't bother to list the sources for the article...so I don't actually know where that information came from. They also went on to say that terrorists have been smuggled through UAE-controlled ports before. Now that I think about it, it's probably a load of hooey. But it still makes me a little uncomfortable to think that the UAE is controlling even a portion of our ports.... but you're right, the media is hyping it up....although I havent heard anything more about it since I made that post...
