Be my critics

So this is a sample of the artwork I have been doing. I NEED to know what you think. Be cruel and be honest. do you like the horizontal or vertical orientation best. Are they worthy of being hung in cuaa's gallery? What can I do to fix it? I esp. want to hear from my fellow art students...Tara and KT....well here are the compositions:

cool! I think it looks good as is. If you want to tweak it maybe make a few less obvious diagonals. Congrats!

I was scanning my friends page and I noticed this without noticing who posted it (since i'm part of an art community as well) and I started coming up with my critique immediately... ha

So now that I know it's yours... here I go~

My first impression is that I like it. I think horizontally it is more intriguing, but vertically it's more powerful, or perhaps intimidating.

The horizontal is more reminiscent of the geometry of a city-scape... much like some themes in your paintings.

I like the dichotomy of the rough, jagged and chaotic edges of the wood with the precise and orderly assemblage of the boards themselves.

I definitely think you should put this in the allumni show because it reflects you on many levels. Your environments, your personality, your unique style of painting - it's all reflected in this piece. You should be proud of yourself.

My second impression is that I really like it. I will have to see it at the show for the third (and 3-dimensional) impression! ;)

I like that you mentioned that it reminded you of my paintings. I actually approached it as a painting, the wood being my pigment as apposed to oil or acrylics. So to say it is a sculpture...well it is, but it is inspired by paint guess.

I agree with spineuzy - it is definitely you. I prefer the horizontal format, but want to know if you have tried it with the diagonals coming up from the bottom. More questions - will you leave it in its natural state? Is is free-standing or wall mounted? The jagged edges suggest different things depending on presentation. If free-standing, they are more active than decorative. Wall mounted leaves them as edges, defining but not interrupting the space, establishing a comfort zone for the viewer by not invading the space. Free standing requires the viewer to respond differently - with caution.

This sculpture is dominated by the perpendicular relationships of the elements. Have you made another that is dominated by obliques and punctuated with horizontals and verticals? Might be a nice companion piece...

Definitely show it.
