Summary: What is a name? What is yours?
What is your real full name? asked Dagger once.
Lengthy for sure, was my reply. Thirty syllables, at the least. Crescent is only five hundred or so years old, and that is only the most recent addition. Burmecians may marry and take on new names, but previous names are not discarded, rather tacked on at the end. Names signify status, bloodlines, royal linage, occupation, allies, friends, and what have you. Anything you can think of, names dictate it. What is our family color? Red. What is our family emblem? A crescent, a dragon, a thunder bolt, a conjoined triad of triangles-respectively, societal rank, occupation, element, and house alliances. All in symbol, all part of our train of names. We are the Crescents, of the Dragoni class, of the Elequis division. We are bound to the Clearics and the Nightwatchers-politically, traditionally, and magically-for long ago our ancestors were once brothers of the same appellation.
Names are everything, in Burmecia. Trace the names and you will find the first. You will find the beginning of all existence, of all generations after. Without history as foundation, we are nothing. Names are everything.
What is yours? Vivi asked.
...I can't quite recall it all.
But I don't understand, Dagger protested. How can you know all that, yet not know?
Amarant snorted. Zidane obligingly translated: She's Freya, of course.
Precisely.
