It's... a post?
Spoilers for Guy Gavriel Kay's Tigana.

This FST is Dianora's.
A little bit of background- Tigana is the name of a country, one that sorcerer and invader Brandin of Ygrath took away in reven for the death of his son. Only those born in Tigana can hear or remember the name. Dianora's father is one of those who dies in vengeance of Stevan of Ygrath.
Dianora herself is now a member of Brandin's saishan, one of his courtesans. We learn that she came to the saishan 20 years ago, with the intention of killing Brandin and letting the name Tigana come back into the world. However, she instead stops an assassination.
Dianora's plot was born because of her brother, Baerd. Baerd and Dianora shared an incestuous love before he went away to find the new Prince of Tigana. Dianora then maneuvered to be captured for the saishan.
After saving Brandin's life, Dianora resolves to do what she'd come to do so long ago and kill him. She seeks a riselka, mythical creature of water. (The childhood verse about riselkas: One woman sees a riselka, her path comes clear to her.) Brandin calls her to him, and he loves her as she loves him.
Dianora performs the Ring Dive for Brandin. He throws a ring into the ocean. If she brings it back, they will win the war. Failure is a bad omen, and so she steels herself to fail and die. But in the end, she decides to go back to Brandin.
The final battle against Alberico at the end of the book is where everything comes together. Baerd is there with the Prince, Alessan. Brandin is killed and Dianora walks into the ocean and dies, Baerd moments too late to find his sister again.
For me, this doesn't capture why I love Dianora. I love Dianora because she loves, and it tears her apart. On one hand, she has her memories of Tigana and her brother, a desire to kill Brandin. On the other, she has her love for Brandin. She chooses Brandin, revenge, and Brandin again. Some believe her weak, but I think that her internal struggle to be true to two irreconcilable ideas is what makes her story so tragic and intense.
This is my tribute to Dianora.
