Currently working on:
Pretty Face ch. 48. The series is going to end soon, and I have no idea what series I'll be doing afterwards. I don't really like PF all that much, but I have to say I'm going to miss doing it.
Goodbye Japan. This is Kazuhiro Ootomo's first work. It's about the experiences of two Japanese guys who move to America. The dialogue is a little bit more difficult than what I'm used to, and there's also a ton of cultural references. In the first chapter alone there's a reference to enka (a Japanese music genre), P.B. Shelley, and Emperor Hirohito's famous speech. I'll release this as a text translation unless I can somehow get Akatsuki Manga to release it as a scanlation. But since this manga doesn't center around panty shots and 10-year old girls, the chances for that are slim.
Just finished:
KOF '96 script. I did this as a favor for Kitsune Sniper mainly out of pity: he said that the original translator did a shitty, Babelfish-esque job. I've seen scripts like that before, and it's no laughing matter.
I started painting D&D miniatures yesterday. It's fun, but I've forgotten how hard it is. I'll have to post a picture of the dire wolf I painted: it's got blood coming out of its mouth and everything! It looks badass! ^_^ *Nostalgic sigh* I miss playing D&D SO much; one of our group members has severe medical problems, another is doing weekend pharmaceutical experiments to supplement his income, and our newest member couldn't make it last time because of a bad headache. I miss the group I had in high school, but they wanted to play ALL THE TIME. It's sad, but I had to break it off with them my freshman year of college because I was concentrating 100% on my schoolwork. (A lot's changed since then.)
Man, I never realized how anti-Catholic this song is. Don't get me wrong, I think this song is great, but wow. I don't normally do this, but I'm going to post the lyrics to prove my point:
Come out Virginia, don't let me me wait
You Catholic girls start much too late
But sooner or later it comes down to fate
I might as well be the one
They showed you a statue and told you to pray
They built you a temple and locked you away
But they never told you the price that you pay
For things that you might have done...
Only the good die young
You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd
We ain't too pretty we ain't too proud
We might be laughing a bit too loud
But that never hurt no one
Come on Virginia show me a sign
Send up a signal I'll throw you the line
The stained-glass curtain you're hiding behind
Never lets in the sun
And only the good die young
You got a nice white dress and a party on your confirmation
You got a brand new soul
And a cross of gold
But Virginia they didn't give you quite enough information
You didn't count on me
When you were counting on your rosary
They say there's a heaven for those who will wait
Some say it's better but I say it ain't
I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints
Sinners are much more fun...
And only the good die young
You say your mother told you all that I could give you was a reputation
She never cared for me
But did she ever say a prayer for me?
I love this song for two reasons: 1)Metal bands catch lots of flak for their anti-Christian lyrics (Slayer, Black Sabbath, Tool), so it's really nice to see a mainstream artist do an anti-Christian song and 2)I really agree with the speaker's point of view, particularly the lines, "I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints / Sinners are much more fun...". The song as a whole is a truly daring "Fuck you" to strict Christian morality, but I think it also portrays the loss of innocence in a positive light. As a woman who didn't lose her virginity until the ripe old age of 20 (just one of the benefits of college), this song brings me back to when I was 16 and terrified of sex. I think of how naive and timid I used to be about the subject, and I can't help but laugh and shake my head and think, "Damn, bein' a prude really sucked."
