Heavens no, but it does blow Harry Potter out of the water. You must read the books, I would tell you why but that would ruin it. I'd almost say that the books where written for you.
As far as par w/ LOTR go read George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire. Its unbelievable. The story is about the reemergence of magic in the world yet by book 4 we've only had a taste of magic. It's all medevil politics and whatnot.
