When in the Jungle

The old man is trying to kill them.

Not only has he dumped them in some godsforsaken corner of this jungle - he’s left them without food. Luffy, cowed as he is by their grandfather, wilts when he realizes there’s nothing to eat. So Ace, faced with a panicking Luffy, scrounges up a beetle to distract his brother with while he addresses the problem of their empty stomachs.

“Ace! Food!” Ace only has time to turn around before Luffy takes a large chomp out of the mushroom in his hand.

“Luffy! NO!” But his brother has already crammed the rest of the mushroom into his mouth and Ace’s heart stops as Luffy reaches for a second.

They’re in the middle of nowhere, alone, and no idea of when Garp will return. If Luffy just poisoned himself...Ace doesn’t know anything about medicine, or poison, or mushrooms. His brother could die.

And then every one of Ace’s worst nightmares comes to life as Luffy drops to the ground convulsing.

It only lasts a second (a horrific, heart-stopping, world-ending second that Ace will never forget) because Luffy starts laughing. And as worried as Ace was before, now he’s furious because dammit Luffy, that wasn’t funny. And hurt, because he’s never known his brother to be cruel.

But when Luffy doesn’t stop laughing after Ace yells at him - laughs harder when he stuffs the second mushroom into his mouth, Ace starts to feel…bemused. Because maybe he knows what’s happening here. And when Luffy finally stops laughing, only to start again when he eats a third mushroom, Ace’s worry and anger give way completely to familiar exasperation...and amusement.

They’re in the middle Garp-knows-where, for who-knows how long, and Luffy is high as a kite

Ace takes the offered mushroom, sits back, and laughs.

Title: A Special Kind of Quiet

Characters: Ace & Luffy
Pairings: Luffy!beetle
Word Count: 300
Prompt: Shade/Shadows

A Special Kind of Quiet

“Hey, I want to show you something.” Ace looks serious, so Luffy stops trying to punch his brother and follows him. Away from the field where they’ve been sparring all day, away from the town, away from the sea that will carry Ace away, soon.

“Here." Here is a pond, surrounded by trees, and just enough space for a bit of sun and grass.

It's a great training ground.

Luffy throws a Gomu Gomu Pistol at Ace, who dodges it, frowning.

"Not here, Luff-" And Ace falls asleep mid-sentence. Again.

Luffy's attempt to take advantage of his brother's inattention fails spectacularly.

"Luffy - look, stop that - Luffy this is a secret place for us, okay?"

"We're going to fight in secret?"

"No Luffy, it's not - this is a place for quiet, alright?"

"We have to fight quietly?"

"No! No fighting, it...it's a mysterious quiet place, okay Luffy?"

"Ooooooooh." He's never seen a mysterious quiet place before.

So he sits beside Ace in the shade of the biggest tree and opens his ears to the special quiet his brother wanted to share with him.

It's...loud. The trees are making noise with the wind, and there are bird singing, and insects buzzing, and Luffy can hear beetles and it's almost as much fun as watching them.

And if Ace wants to sit together - their heads knocking every time he falls asleep, arms draped lazily over each other’s shoulders - instead of fight, that's good too.

They listen to the quiet-that-isn’t for a long time, until everything is shadows and the moon is glowing in the pond.

Luffy doesn’t remember getting to bed, but he must have because that’s where he wakes up in the morning.

After Ace leaves, he visits the clearing alone and remembers all their promises and dreams.

Characters: Tiny!Ace and Tinier!Luffy
Pairing: Ace/sleep
Word Count: 299
Prompt: Family

Freedom and Family

"Ace" poke poke.

"Ace!" poke pok- he grabs the offending limb and Luffy yelps when Ace hurls him at the wall, where his brother makes a satisfying noise of rubber striking wood.

"You are awake!" Little brothers should not sound so happy about being tossed into walls. And they absolutely should not sound so awake this - early, late? - at this time of night!

The sound of rubber feet padding over the floor and then Luffy climbs into Ace's bed. The better to pester him.

Ace kicks him out.

Luffy climbs back in.

Ace resigns himself to no sleep and hopes that whatever has caught Luffy's fancy doesn't take long.

But Luffy is silent - and unnaturally still, breathing quietly into Ace ear where he is curled up next to him - for so long time, Ace figures he has fallen asleep. Just as he decides this is just another of his brother's strange whims and braces himself for the discomfort of an extra body’s warmth through the summer heat, Luffy's voice breaks the silence again.

"Do you want to be the Pirate King?"

"No."

"Is it because I'm gonna be the Pirate King?"

"No."

Silence again. And - had Luffy actually thought he was somehow standing in Ace's way?

"You're really strong."

"Mmmm."

"You could be, if you wanted to - I'd have to kick your ass because I'm gonna be the Pirate King, but you could be."

Ace wants freedom. He wants to roam the seas beholden to no one and nothing.

"No thanks."

Pirates Kings have public executions, not freedom. They have legends, not families. He has no use for Pirates Kings.

But he'll make an exception for Luffy, if his brother ever reaches his impossible dream.

"Want to be my first mate?"

"Sleep, Luffy."
