Fandom wins at life

Fandom is all kinds of awesome. Incredible and just... love.

Unfortunately, before I can describe the specific awesome that led to this post, I have to explain the context, which involves some pretty unhappy wank, and just general human nastiness. Don't click on any links unless you would like to get a headache and be horribly offended.

Her tone was completely out of line and, yes, offensive.

But how awesome is fandom?! XD

I just love that fandom came together and called her out on it and was - by and large - intelligent and graceful about it. &hearts

One of my favorite responses to this is Metafilter's, because they are not fandom. But this is the response her rant got there. It's well worth reading the comments, I think, because they give you a really good idea of what people outside the fandom sphere are thinking. (Also, John Scalzi - pro sci-fi writer - is a member, and chimes in with his view on fanfic.)

Another is published writer and all around amazing sparkly person Sarah Reese Brennan's LJ post here. She's very level-headed about it, I think.

For the point-and-laugh, there's nothing like Fandom Wank.

My personal thoughts is that this is one author's emotional response to her not liking fic, and that she should have thought once or twice before she posted it - especially since I hear there are a lot of things about her rant that are simply not true. (See, for example, pro script writers picking apart the bit about spec scripts in sarahtales's post, or the law-centric comments on Metafilter ( ... )

XD

Your links have been entertaining me all day. &hearts

On the whole, I'm not particularly interested in Gabaldon. And I don't think I would have bothered with her blog except suddenly people were out there defending fanficcers. It was kind of amazing watching fandom mobilize and counter what was, really, an over-emotional, uninformed, unprofessional rant. Fandom is so cool. XD

And classy - I only saw two instances of people resorting to name-calling, overall people were calm and rational and awesome. &hearts

Have you read The Demon's Lexicon?

The name-calling and temper tantrum were uncalled for.
