Luffy relinquished his hat to the island of beasts and declared a two year break from piracy with just one, simple thought driving his decision:

Never again.

He didn't want to abstain from adventure. He didn't want to keep his nakama waiting. He didn't want to stretch his battered heart for months on end, he didn't want to suffer such loneliness.
