It's very strange this year...instead of getting together with friends and family and taking the kiddies trick or treating we've become disjointed

my rule of thumb is when you get into high school, you're too old. So keep on trick or treating till then.
you kinda just reminded me of my mom. She was telling us how when we were kids her family would meet up either durring trick or treating or swing by after the kids have gone to whatever neighborhood they wanted for apple cider and doughnuts. The growing up, doing your own thing and kinda drifting from what one always thought was a holiday tradition.
I like to think of this as a "passing of the torch". I reminisce of the days when this was a blast. Planning my costume, mapping a strategic path through the bets neighborhoods. I even get nostalgic about the homemade treats that our neighbors gave out. I haven't seen a good popcorn ball since I was in sixth grade. After that it was about being allowed to go out on a school night and mess around.
My first Halloween at home alone was sad and lonely, but now it's just a day. I love Halloween and we went to a great costume party this weekend. That will always be fun. But now I think about all the fun the little kids are having experiencing it for the first time alone, or scantily chaperoned.
I have no desire to go out begging for candy, but instead look forward to having them come to me. Next year I will have our house decorated up to the nines, and promise to have lots of good candy.
We did have a great time despite the way things have changed over time. I went through our little town with 2, 11 yr old boys, and the other boy's parents. (I took a boffer weapon too and got lots of complements?!?! I thought that was strange...but fun) Our town has an official trick or treating time between 6 and 7pm though out the downtown area because it's a rural area...we live on a busy main road and get no trick or treaters...afterwards the town gathers together and is treated to cider and donuts around a huge bon fire...Meldar met classmates down there...kind of cool
