i think that after UCB, any where but harvard, johns hopkins, yale, or northwestern or haas or UofM is just going to feel like a massive step down.

so how am i going to take time off AND finance my professional degree and certifications?

oh the dilema. cuz there's no way i'm getting my business or accounting or finance degree from SFState.

don't take time off. get a job that will pay for your classes and go while working part time. my place is paying for 75% of my mba. that's typical for a lot of comapnies. you don't have to loose income or gather school debt.

i will have to find a job near a place from which i would want my mba or cpa or other similar degree, eh?

which also begs the question: how long am i going to have to work here to become a competative applicant at a place that would pay for my degree and allow me to work part time?

a ton of companies pay fro degrees (if you work full time and do school part time that is) you would be suprised. i would start applying sooner rather than later and asking about tuiton reimbursment policies.

i don't have a history in this field nor any formal education, so i am concerned that potential employers would see my resume and my inquiries regarding tuition reimbursement policies and laugh.

i thought the same thing before i learned about the program i'm applying to at sf state - which is better than the one at NYU and the one at Harvard. And cheaper. so it depends on the program.

also in terms of reputation - the museum studies program at SF state is very highly regarded in the professional museum world - so i'd say look into specific programs of whatever area you want to study. ask around and find out where people went. it may be that everyone went to northwestern but you might also find that the prog at sf state or wherever is actually more prestigious than you think.

sadly, while saturated, the business programs at SFState are *not* on par with those of the UC system (davis and santa cruz for example) and definately not competative with yale's school of business. plus, the extended learning programs are largely self-taught. i would love to work in a business academic setting where i could actually get into necessary classes and speak with my instructors. SFState is just too crowded for that to happen. and i'm not going to spend my money on it when its not going to get me where i'd like to go.

if i were studying social work or museum studies, SFState would be worth it. business and accounting and finance? notsomuch. (oh, and women and gender studies, though i have no intention there, but my friend WAS a PhD candidate there and dropped out cuz it was so bad.)
