Harold, I just finished a book you might enjoy called "When the Heart Waits", by Sue Monk Kidd.
Also, have you ever visited an Episcopal church? You might find some solace there... In my experience, episcopal churches tend to be less judgemental than Catholics (and more accepting of GLBT people as well), and they also focus on the suffering Christ. I attended an Episcopal church for years before finding Quakerism; my main hesitation came from my lack of certainty about Christ's divinity... I ended up enjoying the way Quakers worship more anyways, but you might want to check them out, if you haven't already.
Yes, I have. I don't believe they're historically legitimate. I've studied their origins for four years and as much as I'd like to go to the Episcopal church rather than the Catholic (or Orthodox one, but it's in Lexington), I can't because it feels illegitimate* to me.
*Other Protestant churches don't feel that way because they don't claim to be what the Episcopal church claims to be: catholic (little C).
For me, Christ is a sexy daddy who wants to fuck me so hard I lose my breath and scream so loud the cops get called.
And he is a young boy who suffers through rape, torture, starvation, humiliation, extreme loneliness, extremer world poverty, spiritual poverty, and sensory deprivation.
I don't know what your BIL will say. It's purely a personal thing, but in my experience and humble beliefs, women's relationships to Christ are somehow different than men's. I can't really describe it well, but I can sense it. Can you sense it, or is it something peculiar to me?

It's my college mailing address (not my home address), but I work in the college post office so I always get my mail faster (and more reliably) if I am the one who delivers it. :)
