He found her in her office at the Lab. It was late. Or early. It honestly depended on how one looked at the matter. Either way, he could tell she’d been there for awhile.
“Olivia?” Olivia looked up at him. She looked like a mess. Her hair was frazzled, her eyes were bloodshot, and her shirt was wrinkled. He felt his heart sink. He hated seeing her so upset.
“Go away Peter.” she said, putting her head back down on her hands, which were folded on the desk. “ I don’t want to talk to anyone right now.”
“Olivia, I know what it’s like to lose someone you care about. I know it’s rough, especially when they are taken from you.” Olivia looked up at him once again, a mix of anger and sadness on her face. “I know you are beating yourself up for this Olivia, but it wasn’t your fault. None of it was.” he walked over to her and leaned on the desk, putting one of his hands on her back and tried to sooth her by rubbing circles. “ This wasn’t your fault.”
“ Yes it is Peter! Yes. It. Is!” Olivia shot up again, her face “ I was the one who shot him! I did it!”
“ Olivia you shot a shape shifter, not Charlie!” he countered. “ Charlie died back at that hospital! It was the shape shifter who killed him. You shot the thing that killed Charlie. You did not shoot Charlie himself!”
“But it looked like him Peter! It looked like him! I know that was not really Charlie, but in my head…in my head… I killed him. I shot Charlie and I killed him. You talk about loss? You‘re talking about your mother right? Well she committed suicide remember? You didn‘t shoot her in the head!” She felt a tear roll down her cheek again and she quickly wiped it away. She felt Peter stiffen up , and the circles stopped. “I’m sorry.”
“It’s fine.” Peter said, his voice a little cooler than before.
“ No it’s not. I shouldn’t have said that. I know her death was a painful memory for you. I’m sorry.”
“ It’s fine, Livia, really. Hey…” he put a finger under her chin and tilted her head up to look at him. “It. Was. Not. Your. Fault.”
“I don’t know how to handle this Peter. I’ve never…this wasn’t like shooting Nick in the knees, or killing a bad guy. I shot… I shot a thing that looked like my partner for five and a half years. He…I trusted him. And I guess…in a way I feel betrayed as well. I feel uneasy. I am upset with myself for being unable to recognize that something was completely off, different. I should have recognized it sooner…” Peter drew her into a hug and sighed. Olivia began to cry once again, burying her head into his shirt.
“It wasn’t your fault Livia. It wasn’t your fault.” she nodded weakly into his shirt.
“I miss him Peter.” she managed to say through her tears.
“I know Livia, I miss him too.”
"I keep picking up the phone to call him, and then...his wife picks up sometimes and we talk. She manages to talk to me, I can tell she's still a bit rough though. I don't blame her. And sometimes I hang up before she can. I miss talking with him. I miss his attempts to cheer me when I'm down. I miss how he always managed to be a grounding element in my life..."
"I'm sorry." he whispered , feeling like quiet would be the best at the moment.
And as he hugged her closer, he would have sold all of his possessions, become indebted to a million Big Eddies, and taken down any universe , if it meant that she would be happy again.
