Dead Disk Help/Recomendations

I recommend you get one of these and forget about imaging. Using that item, you can attach the drive to a working computer to explore the drive and get just the files you want.

So does that error mean I have a dead computer or a dead drive?

They claim it's for copying your old drive to a new WD drive, but it will most likely work on any destination drive. WD drives are pretty good though.

Burn a CD with the downloaded .iso, and it should give you a bootable CD that will copy the contents of her old drive to the new one, including making the new drive bootable. Just make sure the new drive is at least as big as the one you are replacing.
