“Kuro-tan-sensei, can you keep a secret?” Fai asked him as they were walking side by side towards the school in the morning. They had somehow managed to arrive in the parking lot that morning at the same time, so Fai had immediately plastered himself to Kurogane’s side. The blond had been silent at first, occasionally brushing his arms against Kurogane’s. The gym teacher had not really minded the light contact because Fai had tried in the past to get a lot more physical with him than that. The man could be so clingy, trying to hug him in front of the students. Fai had been mostly quiet on the walk to the school, and Kurogane had been enjoying the rare moments of silence, until Fai randomly asked him if he could keep a secret.
Kurogane was unsure how he was supposed to respond to a question like that and looked over to the man. Fai was staring up at the sky and looked like he was daydreaming about something. Kurogane wondered why the man would pretend to look so completely uninterested after asking such a serious question. He really didn’t know what was going on in that blond head. He thought he might have felt Fai’s fingers lightly brush against his hand, but then the warning bell rang with the result of the science teacher jumping a good three feet away from him.
“Well, I suppose that means we should be getting to our homerooms. Later, Kuro-pyon-sensei.”
Kurogane couldn’t help but notice that Fai was running in a different direction than the one in which his classroom was located. He thought it was a bit odd, but Fai seemed to realize what he was doing and turned in the right direction. Still, Kurogane had to wonder why the man had asked such a question, and the science teacher was on his mind throughout homeroom. He accidentally called his name during role call because he was focusing so much on that unexpected question. His students had laughed, though Kurogane still managed to silence them quickly with a glare. He needed to clear his had, or at least stop thinking about Fai.
During lunch, the blond sat down next to him and provided him with the lunch he had forgotten to give Kurogane that morning. Fai pulled out his own lunch, but he hardly seemed to be eating any of it. Kurogane worried the blond had put some chemical in the food and stopped eating.
Unfortunately, Fai had noticed. “Eh, does Kuro-rin-sensei no longer like my cooking?”
Kurogane was then guilted back into eating again, though he ate much more slowly to make sure nothing tasted funny. He didn’t know what Fai was capable of.
“This lunch is so exceptionally delicious that I need to savor it.” He didn’t like lying to Fai.
“So, Kuro-chan-sensei has yet to answer my question about whether or not he can keep a secret.” He had wondered when they were going to be coming back to that topic. “Can you, Kuro-rin-sensei?”
Kurogane couldn’t decide if the man was teasing him or testing him. “Of course I can.” He decided the best course of action was just to be honest and accept whatever Fai would throw at him next.
“Well, then, would you like to know my secret?” Fai said with a grin. “I can’t tell you here though. Someone else might hear.” The chemist indicated the students and other faculty eating their lunches around them. No one else was paying attention, but that didn’t mean they couldn’t listen. “If you really want to know my secret, you have to meet me after school in the teacher’s lounge.” The after lunch bell rang, and Fai looked sadly at his lunch. “I guess our time together is done for now. Well, shall I see you after school, Kuro-myu-sensei?”
“Fai-sensei!” Sakura called as she approached them. Kurogane felt like the girl had inadvertently ruined an important moment for him and the science teacher. “Good afternoon, Kurogane-sensei,” she greeted him with a slight bow. “Fai-sensei, do you think you can help me with some of the work before class starts? I didn’t fully understand parts of yesterday’s lecture.”
Fai looked regretfully towards Kurogane then changed his full attention to their student. “Sure thing, Sakura-chan.”
Kurogane finished the little remains of his lunch as he watched the two walk away. He had no intention of staying after school with the blond - he wanted to know the secret, sure, but he was too suspicious of Fai to stay alone with him after school. Luckily, Fai’s feelings had been spared by the appearance of Sakura, and Kurogane had been spared further embarrassments.
Still, as he made his way monotonously through the day without any surprise appearances by Fai, Kurogane remembered how he had always been intrigued by the blond since the first day they had met. Something was hiding behind that happy façade, and Kurogane felt it was only natural for him to want to peel away the layers to discover the hidden nature of the man. He was thinking about what Fai’s secret might be so intently that during class he got hit in the head by an errant soccer ball kicked by Watanuki. No matter how much attention he had ever paid to the man, Kurogane had never been able to discover anything real about him. He did not even know Fai’s favorite color even though the science teacher hung off his arm constantly while they were on school property. He knew nothing about his coworker who had taken over his life so completely.
He did end up going to the teacher’s lounge after school, in hopes that he would finally learn something about the blond. Fai had taken his lab coat off and was leaning back against his desk when Kurogane stepped into the office. “Kuro-rin-sensei, it’s impolite to make me wait so long.”
The lights were off in the room, and the evening sun was slanting into the windows. Kurogane took a step closer, then hesitated. He could currently only see the outline of the science teacher. Kurogane did not know why he had finally decided to come, and he feared the man was only teasing him about something he had missed.
“There are no students around.” Perhaps he could have chosen something more appropriate to say at the moment.
Fai shifted his weight against the desk. “Kuro-sama.” Kurogane felt the heat rise to his face from the way the blond said his name while shifting his legs. “Would you like me to tell you my secret?”
Kurogane gulped and nodded.
Fai started moving slowly towards him. “My deepest secret that I’ve never revealed to anyone before and tried to keep hidden even from myself?” As Fai moved closer, Kurogane could see him clearer. “Kuro-sama…”
Fai stopped directly in front of him, and Kurogane felt his breath quicken at the science teacher’s close proximity. “My secret is…” Fai rose to his toes and his lips brushed lightly against Kurogane’s, “… that I’ve wanted to do that to Kuro-sama for a very long time.” Fai took a step backwards, and Kurogane did his best to look at anything but the man standing so openly in front of him. “I’m sorry. I embarrassed you, and I’ve probably made you uncomfortable.”
Fai turned to leave, but Kurogane grabbed his wrist to make him stay. “Hey,” he said to get Fai to turn back around. “Can you keep a secret?”
