So I just heard the new Cecil recordings. I'm glad I finally got a chance to hear what they've been up to. A friend told me before I had heard it that it was JATR meets Amos' bass playing, but since I didn't feel that way before about the music, I didn't allow his opinion to soil my first listening experience ( Read more... )

I really beg to differ on this. I heard Cecil the Cat when you were with them at the Music Hall, and I thought then, that it was just a bit more free-form than TGB. However, yesterday I checked out their website and downloaded the songs, and I was surprised by how much better it had gotten since I last saw them.

The music stands well by itself, and without vocals. There's a subtle progressiveness and complexity to the music, that's not in your face, but as a musician and listener you'll notice the odd structures, and compositions.

All in all I think it's great stuff.

I will not disagree with you that it has gotten much better, because it has come a long way. As far as a singer goes, that was just my personal opinion. The music does have a quirkiness that can stand on its own, and the music still moves me when I listen to it (I've listened to it about 3 or 4 times over now). And the new compositions of the tunes are incredible. I really do enjoy what they've done to the songs. However when I listen to it, in my head I hear it being much more dynamic with a singer.

But yes, they are very talented and they have something very cool going on.

I had to quit lying to myself and to everybody else about who I was. It took me being completely alone for a while to get there. Perhaps someday our paths will again cross musically....and perhaps not. Who knows.
