I believe you have it mistaken, because "they" have proven through the use of Genesis 1:1 to 2:4, and the following genealogies in the old testament that the earth is only 6011 years old (started on October 23rd, 4004 BC...look it up). Consequently, God was creating the sun, moon and other stars and planets (i.e the universe) exactly 5989 years to the day before I was born. Therefore, the universe is only as wide as god wants it to be. As far as the light from the big bang hitting us and blinding everything on earth, well God wouldn't let that happen.
