Anna and I went to see "Threepenny Opera" at Rice today, and it was superb. Strong cast, strong pit, well lit, well directed, well costumed, the whole nine yards. Patrick's sunglasses and hat as a blind beggar get a special mention, because they are awesome. I see a photo of him wearing them posted on Facebook, but it doesn't do it justice ( Read more... )

I really felt like the "central rhetorical question" in the ads was a very ill-placed overstatement of the themes.

It may have felt more modern to you because the translators used a few anachronistic expressions in order to make it feel less stilted -- the original translation from the German is pretty clunky.

The cynicism about human nature is certainly idiomatic to 1928 between-wars Germany. The setting "in London" is a thinly disguised depiction of life during Weimar. There may not be any bankers or actually robberies in the show, but I think the tone pretty well sets up a general national mood that would allow Nazism to seem, temporarily, like a good idea.

(The costumes didn't scream '20's to you?)

(and you're right about the plot; it's not really the point =P)

I figured the dialogue was updated, and I know the costumes are supposed to be period, but again, I felt like the music, characters, and tone of the show were modern, and I figured those were all part of the original intent ( ... )
