Well, yes, I agree. Insurance industry thinks that it is enough to offer tuition reimbursement for the continuing education classes offered by the Insurance Institute of America, CPCU, LOMA, etc... That, however, is a band aid. What is really needed is development of college curriculum for - at a minimum - the core personnel in Underwriting, Claims, stat, etc; with subsequent endowment to attract capable young people into the industry from the get-go. Not because they stumbled upon it after not being able to get a job in their chosen field, but because they find insurance interesting enough on its own. Which it is, - precisely because it involves so many things all at once ( ... )

A highly specialized insurance education is not attractive to the prospective college students. In fact, the college education here is not professionally geared at all; you get some broad coverage of various things, and then maybe go for your Master's. TCI, as it was, was already too specialized; that's part of what killed it ( ... )

I don't know that "lazy" is a good term for this. I think that "afraid" is the more appropriate term. Many feel that insurers have lawyers on their payroll, doing their darndest to deny payment; so logically, in order to counteract this expertise, they should have lawyers as well... They are not always wrong, you know. For the larger claims, with unclear parameters, lawyers are the best choice. If your mother's case was clear cut enough that a clarification of fact was adequate to assure payment, then denial of that claim was due to adjuster's lack of expertise ( ... )
