Rain
“Anya-what in the world are you doing?” Dimitri laughed softly, wrapping his arms around Anya.
“Have you ever bathed in rain?”
“Um…no.”
“It feels like the most natural thing in the world.”
“It’s unhealthy,” he commented.
“No. It’s natural. Don’t be such a baby. Here,” she turned around and started to unbutton his shirt. “I’ll help you.”
“Oh, no, no, no, no, no.”
“Yes, yes. I won’t take everything off. I’m keeping my underskirt and my corset on.”
There was no winning.
“Alright, fine.”
When his shirt was off, Dimitri kissed her, and couldn’t ever remember feeling so complete.
Pain
“Well, I told you not to do it!”
“I couldn’t let him just say those things!”
She raised her eyebrows.
“You mean everything to me-how can I just let him get away with that?”
“Was it worth all this pain?”
“Absolutely.”
She rolled her eyes. “You’re crazy.”
“No, I’m in love.”
“What’s the difference?”
“The point is,” he emphasized, “I just had to defend your honor. I don’t care who he was-he had no right to say that!”
“That doesn’t mean you should have started a fist fight! Now I have to clean you up.”
Dimitri grinned sheepishly.
Cold
“You know how it is,” she said dramatically.
She didn’t, but nodded, presenting a fake smile. The Queen of Mayotte didn’t notice.
“Yes, well, I should be going now. I haven’t spoken with the King of Poland yet.”
Anya curtsied and turned to Dimitri when she had left.
“Dear God.” Anya groaned.
“She’s a very cold woman,” Dimitri agreed.
“If I ever have to talk to her again, I might just explode.”
“Please don’t. I don’t think the maids would appreciate having to pick up your organs and I don’t want your actual heart. You can keep that for yourself.”
Snow
“Come on!”
“I hate snow,” he complained.
“Oh, you big baby. It doesn’t hurt, come on! We’ll build a snowman.”
“Snowmen don’t even look like people!”
“So what?”
“So why call them snowmen?”
“What else would you call them?”
“They could make up a word,” he countered.
“Why don’t you make up one?”
“It wouldn’t become an actual word. It would be pointless.”
“I can demand they change it.
“Yes, I do.”
Dimitri turned around.
Anya gathered some snow, packed it, and threw it. It landed between his neck and his coat.
“Oh my God! That’s cold! I hate snow!”
Music
“What now?
“Let’s dance,” Dimitri suggested, looking around, satisfied with the location.
“Here? On the street? With no music?”
“We did it on the ship without music. This isn’t any different. It’s romantic. Besides,” Dimitri placed her hand on his chest. “There’s a beat. That’s enough for music.”
Anya nodded, entranced. “Okay,” she whispered.
Dimitri led her into a waltz, but Anya soon stopped them.
“You have to at least sing or something.”
“You know I can’t sing.”
“You lie. You have a gorgeous voice.”
Dimitri sighed. “Alright, for the fair lady.”
Anya had never heard a more beautiful song.
Sky
“Look, there’s a train.”
“No, I think it looks like a caterpillar.”
“No, that’s definitely a train,” Anya tilted her head. “Yep, that’s a train.”
“Whatever…there’s a rabbit.”
“Aww, what a cute little bunny rabbit.”
Dimitri turned his head. “Bunny rabbit?”
“Yeeeeah…what’s wrong with that?”
Dimitri shook his head. “Nothing.”
“Okay then.”
“You know I never did this before? Look at the sky and…”
“It’s nice, isn’t it?”
“Hurts a little. The sun’s in my eyes.”
“How’s this?” Anya asked, hovering over Dimitri.
“I don’t know. It might be a little better if you came a little closer.”
He grinned.
Endings
“…And they lived happily ever after.”
“Mmmm,” Anya smiled. “That was nice.”
“Vlad gave this book to me when I was eleven or so,” he tapped it and some dust appeared.
“Are all the endings like that?”
“No, ‘The Juniper Tree’ doesn’t have any lovey-dovey stuff. The Brothers Grimm weren’t always so chipper with their stories. That one’s pretty gruesome, actually.”
“Oooo, read it!”
“Anya you are the strangest girl I have ever known.”
“You haven’t known many girls.”
“Sure I have. I went to school.”
“Yeah, for two years.”
“That’s more than enough.”
“Sure it is. Just read another.”
