James laughed as he realized he was nearly there. Unbelievable. He had to be crazy-surely only a mad man would attempt such a stunt. Still, it tempted him every night and he knew he couldn’t deny the feeling. He knew Governor Swann would most likely banish him from the settlement if he knew what he did on his nights he didn’t work. Perhaps the man of royal employment would even report the fool to the king. The consequences he had the possibility of every night never deterred him from seeing Miss Elizabeth Swann though. Nothing would stop him. Ever.

He wondered if, despite the fact she wouldn’t even acknowledge her feelings openly for him, she thought what he did was at all romantic. He did. Climbing up the side of the governor’s house to see the only woman he would ever love-even though she was only eighteen, and he twenty-four-was definitely romantic in his eyes.

He wouldn’t wear his white powdered wig when he went to see her. It seemed too formal and he wanted a relationship with the girl that was everything less than formal. Besides, he thought she liked his dark hair. It was so much more attractive, to begin with. His appearance was a much more comely look without the wig than when he had it on. James always looked so serious and strict when he wore that dreadful thing. Not to mention, it was unbearably uncomfortable, especially in the hot weather.

A sweet fall wind pushed his hair into his face and he blew it back into place-somewhat. Almost there. He could feel his fingertips slide over the windowsill. A warm glow came from the window, and he wondered if she was already asleep.

When he could peak over the bottom of the window, he saw that she was awake. Dazed, she started into the mirror before her and carefully brushed her hair. He wondered how she managed to always be so beautiful. When she finally so him as he lifted his leg over the windowsill, she gasped in surprise.

“I’m sorry, Miss Swann,” James said softly. “My intent was not to scare you. I beg your pardon if this is an intrusion.”

Elizabeth simply turned around with her finger tips to her mouth, a smile playing against her lips. She laughed softly.

“James, you just came through my window,” she pointed out.

He looked back at where he had come from and smiled sheepishly. “Yes, so I suppose this would count of an intrusion-“

“But not an unwanted one,” she interrupted.

“I’m glad to hear that.”

They stood awkwardly for a moment.

“At least not by me,” she continued. “My father may feel differently.”

He nodded in understanding.

“I will say I do not quite understand why you continue to come, James. You should go-I’m no good for you.”

“No good for me?” James echoed. “Miss Swann-“

“Elizabeth,” she noted quietly.

He continued, without acknowledging her much. “You are the loveliest girl in the entire town. Very smart, too. I admire you greatly for your intelligence.”

“James-“

“Let me finish, please.” He added her name quietly afterward as if he was somewhat shy about using it. “Though you continue to refuse me, my feelings will never cease to exist. They will always be there, I know it well. Perhaps one day, you’ll return the feelings.”

“James, I do already!” she insisted.

“Then what is wrong?”

“You know just as well as I that I could never live up to your expectations-“

“You’ve passed them already. No woman could ever amount to you.”

She blushed, slightly, but continued her speech. “I’m not the one you need, James. You’ve told me several times you need a woman who can stand her ground and someone who will back you up, even if they disagree-“

“And you’ve done that already!”

“James, you should go. Quietly,” she suggested.

“Elizabeth-“

“James, you’ll get caught! Now go, but be careful.”

He walked up closer to her and held her shoulders carefully. “I won’t leave. I love you.”

“I’m not for you, don’t you understand?” she asked with pleading eyes. “I’m too much of a free spirit. There is someone for you, James, but it’s not me.”

“It is, though.”

“And I don’t know if I can be there for you-I might collapse and not be able to handle it.”

“Elizabeth, you’ve already done all of these things-why do you continue to doubt yourself? I have total confidence in you-“

“And if I fail,” she said, “those feelings of confidence will mean nothing and be shattered. I can’t bear disappointing you.”

“You won’t disappoint me.”

“You don’t know that.”

“Elizabeth, I’ve known you for quite some time now. I am sure you’re capable of it-you want to know how I’m sure?”

She nodded.

“Because I intend to do the same for you-or at least do what you ask and need of me. I want to be what you want me to be.”

James took a step back and smoothed his dark hair back. Elizabeth sighed.

“I’ll never be good enough, James.”

“Elizabeth…” his voice had a slight tone of warning in it.

“No matter how much you or I-“

She hadn’t time to finish her sentence as he cut her off by pressing his mouth to hers. James brushed his callused thumb against her cheek as he breathed into her. Elizabeth could feel his warm breath flood her mouth as he gently eased his tongue through her lips. He slipped his hand behind her neck and slowly walked backward to where he knew was a chair. Slowly, he lowered their bodies to it. Her weight was not an issue as he held her on his lap and continued to kiss her.

Elizabeth quickly relaxed even more and pressed her top teeth into his bottom lip. He growled in response and gripped her more tightly. The taste of blood flowed between them, warm and copper-like.

Feeling how the air seemed to be heating up, James pulled away. He stole a few more quick kisses before leaving her lips entirely. She pouted.

“Please don’t make that face,” he requested.

She didn’t stop.

“Elizabeth, if you don’t stop I may cave and we could do something we’ll both regret.”

Elizabeth lowered her mouth to his unshaven neck.

“Elizabeth.”

Her hot breath left a trail from the base of his neck to his hear where she flicked her tongue over the lobe of it.

He coughed.

“Miss Swann!”

“James,” she looked into his eyes, asking for trust. “Please.”

He wrapped his arms around her.

“I’ll stay the night,” he whispered. A soft gulp followed his sentence. He slid her off his lap before carrying her to her bed.

“Lay down,” she said softly.

He gave her a look that told her to behave.

“Just sleep,” she promised.

James replied again, with a look of warning, but acquiesced to her request.

“Good night, Elizabeth.”

He kissed her jaw and wrapped his arm around her waist as he noticed she was already asleep and followed her to her dreams shortly after.

Go away from my window
Leave at your own chosen speed
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'm not the one you need
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who's never weak but always strong
To protect you and defend you
Whether you are right or wrong
Someone to open each and every door

But it ain't me babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

Go lightly from the ledge, babe
Go lightly on the ground
I'm not the one you want, babe
I'll only let you down
You say you're lookin' for someone
Who'll promise never to part
Someone to close his eyes to you
Someone to close his heart
Someone to die for you and more

But it ain't me babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe

You say you're lookin' for someone
To pick you up each time you fall
To gather flowers constantly
And to come each time you call
And will love you for your life
And nothin' more

But it ain't me babe
No, no, no, it ain't me babe
It ain't me you're lookin' for, babe
